Having a guest bedroom can be an incredibly useful addition to your home. However, having an extra guest bedroom comes with the responsibility of keeping it clean and tidy, not to mention aesthetically pleasing for your guests.

Thankfully, there are lots of guest bedroom ideas which are low maintenance but will still make the room feel like a valued space in your home.

If you want a comfortable and stylish room where your guests can feel at home (or better still, as though they’re in a posh hotel) but you don’t have hours to spend preparing it every time it’s needed, we’ve got some top tips just for you.

Go With Timeless Not Trends

When it comes to decorating, it’s best to choose timeless styles rather than following trends. If you’re serious about impressing every guest, resist the urge to fill the room with your tastes (especially if they’re a little on the eclectic side!) and choose furnishings and colours that you’d expect to see in a hotel.

Include warm neutrals and whites along with wooden textures and you'll retain the bright and airy feel without it feeling cold and clinical.

Opt For Vinyl Tiles

To create a guestroom that can be ready in a flash, you need to get into the low-maintenance frame of mind. We’re talking easy-clean flooring such as wood-effect vinyl tiles instead of carpets.

This needn’t mean you have to sacrifice your guest room’s homely look. Warm-toned luxury vinyl flooring gives all the characteristics of real wood floors without the price tag.

Take our Pronto Denya Walnut Luxury Vinyl Tile for example. The walnut’s oiled wood-like finish and dark chocolatey colouring give it that air of luxury and make it the perfect match for a classic feeling interior.

You could also go that extra mile and add a stylish rug or two. Adding some additional warmth will give your guests some.

Invest In Some High Quality Bedding

Investing in high-quality bedding is a great way to create that high-end hotel feeling. To ensure your guest’s comfort, check the duvet is season-appropriate. For summer, look for one between 3 and 4.5 tog. In winter, your guests may find themselves shivering in anything under 12 tog.

If you have a small guest bedroom and cannot keep the bed made in between visits, keep bedding, pillows and duvet in vacuum bags. Not only will this help you save space it will also keep them fresh and clean for when you next need them.

Add Texture With Brick

Adding a brick feature to your walls is a great way to add texture and character to your space. Brick-patterned wallpaper can sometimes be quite lacklustre, missing the texture you find with real brick. However, brick effect tiles can be a great alternative.

Not only do they look great, but they are also incredibly easy to maintain and keep clean. Another bonus if you're looking for something low maintenance.

Brick effect tiles are available in a variety of colours and finishes including textured, matt, gloss or metallic glazes. So whether you are aiming for a bright, modern look or a rustic reclaimed look, you'll likely find what you are after.

Give Your Guests Multiple Lighting Options

Including multiple lighting options in the guest room is a great way to make the space feel warm and cosy. Creating multiple pools of light at different heights in a room can help achieve a layered look, adding to the cosy aesthetic.

Try including table lamps, floor lamps and accent lighting to draw focus to a particular feature in your space.

Add Plants And Greenery

Adding plants and flowers to your space can help to create a calming environment, making them perfect for a guest room. These plants can also help to improve the air quality, making the space feel more inviting. If you are not green-fingered, then invest in high-quality realistic faux plants that you can use instead for the same effect.

Opt For Blinds Rather Than Curtains

As lovely as they look, curtains can often trap dirt and odours are more likely to linger on the fabric. They can often be hard to clean and putting them in the washing machine isn't always an option.

For a low-maintenance alternative, try installing blinds or shutters rather than curtains. Roman blinds are incredibly durable and much easier to keep clean. They still look great and function well at blocking out plenty of light, especially if you add a blackout backing to the reverse side, so your guests can get some well-earned rest.

Keep Your Space Clutter Free

Having lots of clutter in your room not only makes the room look messy but it also adds to the time you spend cleaning and tidying the space.

Keep your decorations to a minimum and only use a few well-placed decorative items like a mirror, a picture or a potted plant.

If you do need more storage, consider investing in a nice chest of drawers (online marketplaces are great for grabbing a bargain!) or adding a few decorative storage baskets and boxes. These items can still add a decorative element and help to reduce the visible clutter in your space.

Add warmth with wood panelling

Wooden panelling is a great way to create a high-impact focal point in your guest bedroom. Wooden panelling is available in a variety of colours including natural oak, sycamore, chestnut or wych elm for a more dramatic look.

Not only does wooden panelling look great, but it's also very easy to maintain and has great sound-insulating properties too.

Installing wood panels is a relatively simple DIY job that you can do yourself. They can be secured to most wall surfaces using either screws or nail-free glue.

Include Plenty Of Soft Furnishings

There's nothing more inviting than a bed layered with warm blankets and extra cushions. Better yet, these items can be switched out as and when you like. So, if you fancy a bit of refresh, you can simply replace the cushion covers as and when you please. Adding these final touches will make sure your guests are always comfortable whilst also adding an extra element of interest and texture to your space.
