We’re here to help you with colourful garden ideas so you can reflect your love for all things bright in your outdoor spaces. As with our homes, our gardens should reflect our personality, our likes and how we want to use the space, whether that be for relaxing or entertaining. Designing your garden around your lifestyle is key and just like your interior, creating a colour palette is a great place to start.
If you’re an avid gardener, then designing your palette around the plants and flowers you want to grow is a good indicator of what styles you can adopt in the space. If you’re not one for digging in the muck, then a landscaped space revolving around furniture is probably the way to go. Whichever your preference, start with your plants or furniture and decide on what style suits them best, from there you can get inspiration for your colour palette.
In this blog post, we’ve created 8 looks that involve lots of colourful garden tiles with different inspiration points of the garden in mind. And if you want more inspiration on what style of tiles would suit your garden best we have a handy guide for you.
1. A vibrant flower bed
If you’re a keen gardener of flowers, fruits, veggies, or herbs then the colours of your planting will dictate what looks best in the rest of the garden. We’ve created a couple of colour palettes based on colourful flower beds.
Gardens designed abroad based on typical English styles are a great source of inspiration as they often use a more creative mix of planting. In this Australian example by Nicholas Scott, he’s used geums, salvias, fennel, euphorbia, and japonica to create a cottage garden feel in a hotter climate. The warm tones create a beautiful colour palette, pick out the subtle blue and go bold on your garden fence. Balance the look with a plainer tile on the floor, we love the Hartley tile used in a herringbone pattern to create a pretty garden path. Keep your furniture neutral and of natural materials.
For a bold statement, why not try the same plant on repeat but in different harmonious hues like these hydrangeas. Contrast the big blooms with streamlined furniture and a dark wall or fence, a charcoal or deep grey shade will make the plants pop. Continuing with a darker tile on the floor will really make the foliage stand out and be the focal point of the garden. Choose outdoor tiles in shades of grey which can be laid on cement, grass or gravel.
When landscaping your garden, it’s important to create areas or zones for how you want to use the garden. If you’re wanting a large patio area for entertaining, then this can be the key focus and the rest of the garden can complement that area.
If you have a smaller garden then a great way to make it feel bigger is to paint your furniture and fencing in the same colour or tone, this will help create a seamless look and draw the eye around the whole space instead of focusing on just one area. A gentle sage tone is perfectly on trend, works brilliantly with any style of planting, and works with a myriad of tile options. Cuprinol’s Fresh Rosemary is the perfect shade, not too green or grey. A subtle tile like Everscape would work well but if you want a splash of pattern opt for the Berkeley Essence Eden tile! Warm up the look with your accessories, lighting, and a cool pizza oven.
For wider, more open spaces, you can use bold accent colours to bring in the focal point. A hot shade of orange is a great way to liven up a space as it works perfectly with shades of green, brown, grey, and charcoal. Create a contemporary feeling space amongst nature with a concrete fire pit and soften it with wispy ferns and grasses. We love the sloped relaxed feel of these wooden chairs, typically American in style, you could get them made bespoke or find an alternative and paint them.
Particularly relevant for those with smaller, enclosed gardens, the boundary wall or fence is an important element to think about and can often shape the inner space’s look and feel.
A rustic style courtyard often works well with pockets of bold colour with a heritage feel. This deep blue hue sits perfectly against the aged flagstones and modern planters. Inject some life by hanging an outdoor mirror, we love this aged cream one from Cox and Cox, the lighter tone helps bring together the neutral floor, brickwork, and painted feature. Complete the look with a bistro style dining set, galvanised or painted metal styles would work best.
Create an urban jungle in a side return! The bold green planting can be warmed up by using shades of brown. Parquet style flooring sets the tone and extends your living area whilst a muted gold on the masonry ties the look together. If the wood flooring feels a little out of your comfort zone, opt for a brown toned terrazzo effect instead.
If you’ve got the space, water is an excellent addition to a garden, it creates a relaxing ambience and can be a great pull for certain wildlife. If you don’t have the time to maintain a pond, then a simple water feature can be a great focal point for the rest of your garden scheme.
The simple minimalist style of a large water bowl creates a meditative stillness in the summer sun and a dramatic feature in the rain. The simplicity of the design means you can dress it up as you like. Here we’ve created a bold monochromatic look for a contemporary courtyard. Balance out the look with your planting, feathery green grasses, white alliums, and dark chocolate cosmos mixed in a wild feeling garden help soften the monochrome.
For something more colourful and pattern orientated, be inspired by the water fountains of Morocco. A white patterned tile will allow you to inject more colour over time, like this muted blue shade which really pops against bright green foliage and dusky grey pebbles. Finish the look with antique brass taps that create the water flow, hunt for some on eBay and Etsy for unique styles.
