Commonly known as lash clips, this stands for Level, Align, Space & Hold, levelling clips are a two-part system consisting of a clip and a wedge, ensuring your tiles are absolutely level without any lipping or exposed edges.
They can align tiles from 9-15mm thick ensuring even grout joints and can be used for both wall and floor tiling. The holes in the base of the clip allow for the adhesive to pass through, ensuring no voids are left under the tile.
The clips are available in different sizes depending on the grout joint you’d prefer. Dakota clips are available in 2mm and 3mm sizes.
In most cases the clips and reusable wedges are sold individually however there are options for a one pack solution where clips, wedges and the application gun are sold together.
Here’s a quick how to guide to using spacers and levelling clips for your tiling project.
Alternatively, the same job of levelling can be completed using a Spin Level Clip, see our how to video below with a step by step guide on how to use the spin clips as they’re slightly different to the regular clips.
Wedges are perfect for the bottom row of tiles where they meet the floor surface, helping to create an expansion joint. The height of the wedge is adjustable in small increments, up to 7.5mm, depending on the wedge size.
Once your adhesive is applied and your tile spacers in place, the tile wedge can be pushed or pulled out to adjust the position of the tile whilst holding it in place. To achieve a professional result, ensure the first row of tiles is completely level and always use with tile spacers to get the joint size right.
Levelling clips are not a substitute for preparing a substrate for tiling. You must where possible, ensure your floor is clean, level, dry and free from dust, laitance and any other contaminants.
Using a self-levelling compound such as Ultra-Level It One is often the best and easiest solution to ensure a nice flat surface on which to tile, for more information on levelling compounds, read our useful guide as it’s key to use the right product for your substrate.
Once your floor is level you are now ready to tile your floor using the levelling clips.
The two-part system is simple to use. Apply your adhesive as per the manufacturer’s guidelines and then slide the required number of clips under the tile (approx. 50mm from the edge), for a grout joint wider than 2 or 3mm, use the clips in conjunction with a wider tile spacer.
Lay the next tile and place the clips under the tile as instructed above. Now slide the wedge into the clip ensuring a snug tight fit. Adjust the tile so the sides are correctly aligned and pushed tightly against the clips.
You may find it easier to add the same size tile spacer into the corners of each tile as you go. Simply repeat the process until you have completed tiling.
Leave the adhesive to dry for at least 24 hours; once ready, remove the wedge from the clip and simply kick off the side of the clip to snap them off. The clip is designed to snap off below the tile line.
If you’re using the clips on a wall, use a rubber mallet to remove them so as not to mark or damage the tiles.
Keep the wedges as they can be used again on your next project.
