How To Master The Art Deco Tiles Trend

With the recent love for classic white marble, gold metals and geometrics it was only a matter of time until all these different elements came together to form one trend, Art Deco.

Most famous for its architecture, Art Deco actually began in France just before World War 1 but didn’t take off until the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925. Originally representing faith in social and technological progress, the movement was a pastiche of many different styles but it is now synonymous with America. New York skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and modernist authors such as F.Scott Fitzgerald painted a picture of the era depicting its luxury, decadence and extravagance.

Associated with both luxury and modernity the simplistic styles produced back then are still relevant today. Herringbone, chevrons and geometric patterns were the decorative flourishes of the movement and when used with modern materials and pared back shapes the look thrives in contemporary homes as well as those built in the style during the 1920s and 30s.

Pair a vibrant coloured tile like Syren with a darker wood-effect floor for a dramatic effect. A colourful geometric design will create a striking feature whilst elegant touches of marble, gold and glass will keep the look clean and fresh. Neutral fabrics clash nicely with rich velvets and white ceramics look perfectly placed next to bold black frames.

For a more subtle hit of pattern, choose a muted colour palette or a faded design like our Geomento tile. Mixing different eras together can create an eclectic but timeless finish, whilst focussing on one particular era can date quite quickly. Combining a structured tile like Hemline in a crisp white with a mid-century piece of furniture creates an interesting contrast. The addition of gold taps, trims, and a contemporary square basin provide the touch of elegance associated with Art Deco.

Gold is an important part of the Art Deco trend as it breaks up bold patterns and stark white marbles whilst cleverly blending all the different elements of a room together. Blogger and influencer Hannah Crosskey has recently renovated her beige bathroom into a sleek modern space that has hints of Art Deco. The crisp white Artisau tiles have been laid in a chevron pattern with touches of brushed gold and marble for a clean finish. The streamlined shower screen and monochrome artwork tie the look together by creating depth and interest against the white walls.

Art Deco is more about styling than the actual materials used. Adding hints of gold to a darkly painted living room with give it an added glamour.
