Our tips for choosing the right Matrix tiles for your home

Choosing the right tiles for your home is an important part of any interior project. Beyond shaping the décor, tiles have the power to transform the ambience of your home. Here are some of our top recommendations for choosing the right tiles for your home, featuring our Matrix Collection.

Step one: Matt vs gloss tiles

The battle of matt vs gloss tiles is ongoing. In recent years, matt tiles have been favoured for their ability to create a contemporary, sleek look that can be used as a muted base for textured interior design trends. However, gloss tiles are having a mini-revival with luxury fixture brands like Ceramica Cielo creating opulent, colourful designs.

In our Matrix Collection, we have an array of matt and glossy tiles. Our matt tiles are ideal for creating light, minimalist interiors as they help blend the harsher lines of stark colours and streamlined edges. In contrast, our glossy tiles are perfect for smaller spaces like bathrooms or kitchens, helping to open up the space and enhance the natural light.

For a stylish look, we recommend combining textures in your living space. If you have glossy kitchen units, consider complementing them with a contrasting matt tile splashback to add depth to the space. In more confined spaces, like bathrooms or alcoves, opt for glossy tiles to accentuate the natural light while using matt fixtures for a sense of drama.

Step two: Square tiles vs rectangular tiles

When choosing your tiles, the next step is to decide what shape Matrix tile you would like. In our Matrix Collection, there are two formats suitable for wall tiling: square and rectangular. We offer the classic 10x20cm flat-surfaced metro tile in a brick shape and the square 14.8x14.8cm tile.

Both square and rectangular tiles allow you to create a variety of different laying patterns, offering the opportunity to make a feature on your wall, whether with bold colours or natural tones.

We recommend using the rectangular Matrix tile in a herringbone pattern. This laying pattern can help change the perception of the size of your room - ideal for spaces with lower ceilings or shorter dimensions.

For the square tile, especially in the matt finish, a linear stacked laying pattern brings a contemporary feel without being too graphic or particularly stylised, adding a touch of sophistication to your space.

Step three: Choosing your colour scheme

A lot of research has gone into the Matrix Collection to ensure the colour palette is versatile and suitable for a variety of schemes, styles and personalities while maintaining longevity and a timeless quality. Here are just a few of our favourite tile colour schemes.

Dark undertones

The darker neutral undertones in our Matrix Collection are versatile, go-to colours. Whether you prefer a muted scheme or want to mix the jewel tones with neutrals, the colour palette cleverly interlocks giving you the ability to mix and match across the palette with ease. This unique feature of the Matrix Collection, allows you to effortlessly mix and match across the entire spectrum, providing endless possibilities for creating a cohesive and stylish look.

Moody blues

There are, however, a few select colours that feel very now. Deep and moody blue, like the Ocean Teal tile has been on trend for the last couple of seasons. Similarly, the Heritage Blue tile works particularly well in older properties with a Victorian or Georgian influence.

Soft terracotta

The Burnt Amber Matrix tile is reminiscent of those softer terracotta shades we’ve seen pull through from influences of Scandinavian design and the revival of the 1970s aesthetic. Ideal for creating spaces that exude cosiness and warmth with a contemporary touch.

Bold pastels

But we also love the energy from the pastel shades; Blossom Pink remains a favourite in interiors and the Primrose Yellow tile has an understated charm. However, the real excitement lies in blending these colours in the same palette. Burlington Bathrooms has a bespoke collection that has brought coloured sanitary ware back into vogue. With colours like Alaska Blue, Moon Grey and Confetti Pink it might not be long until we see the comeback of the avocado bathtub!

Relaxing neutrals

If the idea of mixing pastels and brights is perhaps a little too experimental for a long-term investment, consider using warm-toned neutral tiles. Brooklyn Stone embodies that relaxing, sanctuary feeling we need in our everyday lives.

Step four: Choosing the right grout colour

The final stage in selecting your tiles is to choose the right grout colour and trim to achieve the desired finish - whether they're coordinating or contrasting.

In the Matrix Collection, all 23 colours come with a colour-matched grout and trim. This feature ensures that the final look is seamless which is particularly useful for spaces with numerous edges that you don’t want to stand out or make a feature of.

Alternatively, with the Matrix Collection, you have the freedom to opt for a harmonious or even contrasting grout colour to define your tiles and make a dramatic design statement. Whether you want to use a coloured grout with a white tile to add interest or use a yellow grout with an orange tile, it’s your colour palette and your design so have some fun!
