The colour green has an interesting historical backstory, even potentially killing Napoleon Bonaparte in his bed, but there is also a lot of interesting modern psychology behind it too. Green, being the colour of nature, promotes a freshness as it represents growth. It also communicates peace whilst promoting balance.
In particular, sage green. Inspired by the herb’s dried leaves, it embodies the beauty and freshness of nature but its underlying greyish, silver tone can also feel quite neutral. Because of this, it makes a great all-round colour and is easy to pair with other tones of green as well as other hues like red, pink, purple, blue and yellow. You’ll find that this particular shade of green also transcends time, working with both heritage and contemporary interior schemes alike.
In this article, we’ll show you some green inspired colour palettes that will work with various tones of sage green along with some tile ideas too.
As with any colour, green has various shades within the hue, sage green being one of them, but then you can also remix the tone of the shade to create different looks.
Here’s four examples from Dulux Heritage.
1. The first palette feels very neutral, DH Pearl Colour is a light toned sage with a warm undertone so when pairing it with other shades of green, a similar yellow undertone should be considered. This palette works very well with off-whites and darker wood grains for modern country or heritage inspired looks. Rustic materials like galvanised metal, aged wood and glossy tiles would do well in a variety of settings.
Our Astrea Sage tile would be a good pairing as the delicate crackle effect would provide a rustic yet glossy surface finish. Alternatively, if you wanted a contrasting white then choose Cadence Pearl or MH Rustic Country White.
2. Palette two feels a lot fresher and brighter than palette one, this is because Green Slate and Sage Green have a silver/blue undertone but to stop it looking too cold, DH Pearl Colour adds that little bit of warmth back in. This palette works well in airy spaces with a Scandi-inspired aesthetic. Think cool beech woods, painted brick and brass accents.
You can add texture to this look using a brick effect tile like Hartley White, and light wood grains with Elevo Chevron in Natural. White boucle furniture, beige linens and rattan would finish the look!
3. The third palette has a muted feel to it making it ideal for heritage inspired rooms. Stone Green pairs well with classic features, soft greys and sumptuous fabrics like velvet and crisp cotton.
If you want full on Georgian then use Berkeley Essence Eden on the wall or floor for a splash of pattern. Alternatively, for something plain and classic, try Metro Sage on the walls. The bevelled edged rectangular design is synonymous with Victorian design.
4. Our final palette has a darker feel but still promotes freshness. The deep, luscious DH Grass Green is balanced between the blue and yellow tones of Sage Green and DH Pearl Colour. This balance of tone works well for contemporary interior schemes, we love it with a coordinating tile, like Flute.
Modern textures and shapes will add a contemporary feel to a space, take Flute Sage Decor’s reeded surface or PreKast’s curved pattern as examples. Complement the look with a matt black metal trim or shiny gold hardware. White marble also works well within this scheme if you want to elevate the look further.

We’ve already mentioned tile trims, they add definition to your tile scheme and work like a rug in a living space, they bring all the elements together in harmony, tying your scheme together.
But have you considered coloured grout? White can often look stark against coloured tiles and overly traditional so consider a matching grout colour, like BAL’s Micromax3 Eco Grout in Sage.
