How To Transform Your Home With Tiles

The Entryway

The hallway can be a tricky space to get right, it should be practical with a heavy footfall of dirty shoes passing through every day yet say something about you and the rest of your home, inviting those guests in. Make the most of Victorian proportions and use a dark wood-effect tile on the floor, we love Andira Smokey Brown in a traditional parquet lay pattern. Use the same tile as a skirting panel and remove the hassle of the upkeep of wooden skirting.

To make a smaller hallway seem bigger keep to a light color palette everywhere else and install large porch windows. Inject a little personality into the space with a coloured wall tile, here we've used the Minton Hollins China Blue range, a pop of blue is on-trend and the traditional shape of these tiles are a timeless classic.

Open Living

A popular trend is to extend traditional properties at the back of the house to create one larger living space, an open kitchen-diner that leads out into the garden. A great way to create that seamless effect is to use the same tile running through the entire space, making it look larger. A slate-effect tile like Regional Reflections Dwyran used here is a modern option that offers versatility as well as practicality. The moody grey tones running through the tile make it easy to pair with kitchen units, wall tiles and other fixtures and fittings.

Adorn the walls with something pastel for a subtle hint of color, these glossy Diamante Pastel tiles in Bone and Mist, when laid in different laying patterns, add interest to a neutral scheme. Try a herringbone splashback with a contrasting grout to create a little depth to your kitchen walls.

If you're lucky to have a larger space downstairs then you can use different tiles to help create zones. Separate the kitchen and living area by using a patterned tile. The small format Archivo Zahra tile has a slight distressed feel giving a modern space texture as well as bold pattern. Keep the pattern looking seamless with a coordinating grout.

A Place To Unwind

As well as being the most practical room in the home besides the kitchen, the bathroom can also be a sanctuary in the evenings. Create a relaxing atmosphere with cool grey tones and a large freestanding bathtub. A matt marble-effect tile like Legato works well on the walls, the vertical lay pattern lends a sense of luxury and the grey grout ties in well with the veining of the tile. Finish your tiles just short of the ceiling to finish with a luxury brass trim like Foundry and add a splash of color at the top to lend warmth.

The dark floor is Regal Ash in a large 40x80cm matt porcelain tile, highly durable and with an anti-slip rating, it's safe for all the family to use. The larger tile means fewer grout lines which creates the illusion of a larger space, perfect those that don't want their tiles to look too grid-like. Add a couple of potted plants and a few candles and using this room will be the highlight of your day.
