When entering our homes, more often than not we are greeted by our staircase. We are seeing show stopping steps all over the place, this trend is only growing and we want to celebrate it too. Steps are a great opportunity to have fun with interiors and see what you can do with a narrow space. Why not dress them to impress?

Have you heard of smalt? Smalt is a material formed by mixing cobalt oxide with molten glass which then creates this striking beautiful blue. This stunning look was most popular in the Victorian era, dressing staircases in most famously, the Queen’s home; so you could call this look majestic. What a beautifully grand statement created by this spiralling cobalt curve.

Inspired by this show stopping style, here are some ways to jazz up the steps in your home...

Bright and Blue

This simple porch is transformed by this eye-catching pattern layered throughout the walkway. The minimalism of the furniture allows for this added décor to really stand out and add character without cluttering a space like this. Outdoor steps are a perfect way to introduce your homes with some character before even walking in. Use our Berkeley Essence™ Sky Tile to recreate this look.

Statement Steps

This look is a patterned paradise. The safety net of a monochrome colour scheme means these stairs look effortless and classic yet ultra-modern and individual in your home. This easy to create look can be achieved with our Berkeley™ Charcoal Tile.

Fuller With Colour

Flesh out those stairs with some colour, on the walls or on the steps themselves. The hallway is a commonly used but often forgotten area, adding some colour to it will draw the eye up the stairs making the room seem bigger and the stairs taller; impacting the whole feel of it. This use of colour blocking is a wonderful way to brighten up your hallway and show your guests your personality. If 4 colours is a little out of your comfort zone, try Dulux’s colour of the year, Tranquil Dawn for a serene statement.

GOOD TO KNOW

If you’re tiling your stairs make sure you use a metal trim on the edges to protect your tiles and create a clean, safe edge. If you’re only tiling the riser than ensure the stair tread has a small lip over the riser to protect the tile.

Colourful steps

Don’t forget the accessories when spicing up a space such as the staircase. A gallery wall is a great option; just grab your favourite prints, some quirky frames and your own creativity! This livens up a wall and can be made as personal or as arty as you wish.
