Styling an outdoor space can sometimes be tricky with a lot of homeowners seeking the advice on a professional landscaper. But why not get stuck into some mood boards yourself to narrow down your tastes and create a detailed brief to achieve the look you want with your chosen professional.

A lot of people shy away from using dark colours in the home, but in the bright outdoors using darker hues can create an amazing atmosphere for both day and night.

Black works really well as a foundation, it makes other neutrals and colours pop, particularly green. If you’re a little scared of gardening, you can go for some easy planting and it’ll still look great!

To avoid black overpowering the space, mix in some lighter neutrals with a warm undertone and ensure you use a variety of textures to add interest. In this scheme we’re using a slate effect floor tile, Everscape Enis Black, and contrasting it with the Enis textured decor tile in a warm ivory tone.

You can then build on this scheme by introducing layers of colour, using shades of green in your planting and interesting shaped pots dotted around the patio.

If you are going for black, we’d advise avoiding black surfaces that you’ll touch with bare skin as they will get hot in the summer sun, furnishings like tabletops, seat cushions and accessories. Always opt for a lighter cushion seat topper and try and go for clear glass or natural stone for your tabletop.

Investing in a good quality parasol or covered pergola is a great idea for entertaining in the day and introduce warm toned string lighting for the evening for added umph.

If you’ve got more of a handle on gardening then a typical English country garden could be right up your street.

Set up some simple foundations and your lovely wild like cottage garden can grow around it to create the perfect cosy outdoor space.

Traditional flagstones are great for this look, but you can cheat this by using Everscape’s Pitsbury pattern tile, the black shade offers the perfectly muted, slightly worn in look associated with older flagstone slabs.

If you don’t have a walled garden then fake it using the Hartley tile, it’s available in four colours but the classic Old Red would suit the look. It mimics the look of brick so it’s perfect for recreating a walled garden effect on a budget. To contrast with these foundations, using a sage tone of paint on wooden gates and doors will help soften the look and blend the wall and floor together.

You can then get a little more adventurous with your furniture. We love the pop of pink with this metal Bistro set for a courtyard feel. Or, if you’re looking for general seating, a metalwork bench adds a touch of sophistication.

Introduce little bronze statues and wildlife habitats like beehives and insect houses so nature can add a little character. Build up your foliage with leafy ferns, trawling climbers and lots of wildflowers for a true cottage feel.

At the other end of the spectrum is pure, colourful fun! Tropical doesn’t have to mean a few tiki lamps stuck into your lawn, it can be a sophisticated way to introduce both colour and pattern into your garden.
