Red is fast becoming the colour of choice both on and off the catwalk. This bold hue was seen on the Spring/ Summer 2017 catwalks and swiftly continued into the Autumn/ Winter collections. Red is a great transitional colour but it's important to use it correctly. You don't want to overpower your space to the point of headache.

There is a huge range of shades in the red spectrum and each one tells a different story. Whether you want to play it safe with a more neutral shade (a red with a brown undertone) or go big and bold with a cherry red. You can always tone down or amp the color up with the right accessories, it just depends on your mood and how you want to use the space.

Bright reds when mixed with golds can look a little too brash and link closely to the traditional Eastern European aesthetic particular popular in Russia (they have enough space to pull it off!) But here in the UK we often want something a little more subtle with an exotic flavor. Enter, Chinese Red; the perfect combination of British eccentricity and Asian opulence.

For an authentic feel, mix this hue with black lacquer furniture, oriental patterns and muted neutral textiles. You can add some mid-toned greys into the color palette to create a more contemporary mood.

For a more traditional English look, terracotta is your natural stone of choice; a design staple for over 5,000 years if it ain't broke don't fix it. Play with colours and mix a red based terracotta with powdery pinks, dove grey and distressed metals for a modern industrial look.
