Hibernation is usually on most people’s agenda come November so how can we change up our homes to reflect our cosy needs without a complete overhaul? We take you through some of our hints and tips to help transform your home by getting ready for winter.

Lighting

As the nights draw darker earlier and earlier, we must use artificial lighting for longer. A great way to use lighting to differentiate your day in the wintry months is to change the type of lighting you use. When you’re in full productive mode, stick to crisp daylight-like lighting to keep you engaged. When the working day ends, wind down with warmer lighting and as you settle down for the evening opt for floor and table lamps that give out a soft, warm glow, certainly useful if you don’t have access to a roaring fire!

Scent

The smell of our homes plays a key role in changing our mood. We certainly don’t want it to smell bad, but we also want it to be either harmonious with how we are feeling or uplift us. A candle will not only look aesthetically pleasing in situ, but it will also represent the warm flicker of a cosy fire and of course, smell fantastic. Opt for something fresh using pine trees (essential if you’re not planning on having a real tree this festive season!) or choose something musky and sweet like a maple bourbon smell. For a consistent smell, without the hassle of worrying about an open flame, try a diffuser in the same scent throughout your home for a consistent atmosphere.

Bedding

A change of duvet tog is always advised in the colder months but investing in some good quality bedding in more autumnal colours will improve your mood and your sleep. Choose silk pillowcases to help your hair and skin fight the dipping temperatures and go for a heavy cotton or muslin duvet cover for a soft but luxurious touch over your body. A velvet or faux fur throw will add a further touch of cosiness to your space, careful though, anything too nice and you won’t want to leave it every morning!

Greenery

Cut flowers have always been popular, especially during the spring and summer, to show off nature in bloom and enliven our homes. It’s become fashionable of late to create a natural wreath for any seasonal occasion for the front door and of course most of us will deck out the house during the festive season but what about the other wintry months?

Simple evergreens in various formats are a great way to decorate without feeling too festive. Greenery without ornamentation is simply nature at its best. Like your table’s cut flowers, a rustic vase or jug on the coffee table, a wreath hanging in an unexpected place or an understated garland across the mantel or a kitchen dresser, try to keep the foliage simple and unornamental.

Cooking

Filling your home with scent isn’t limited to candles, get in the kitchen and enjoy cooking a hearty meal. Dust off that slow cooker and perfect your chilli recipe or create a posh sausage and bean stew on the hob. Whatever your food of choice, a good meal defines the winter period and cooking at home is a great way to switch off after work and indulge in something delicious without leaving the comfort of your own home!

Under Floor Heating

The last step in creating the ultimate cosy home is underfloor heating. Once seen as a luxury, energy efficient electric systems are now proving to be more sustainable and economically sound compared to regular heating systems. By using radiant heat, the warm air rises upwards rather than circulating around the room proving to be a more efficient way of heating your home as well as being cosier underfoot. It makes floor tiles an even more appealing option across the home as you can marry practicality with warmth in the winter months. The Rise electric underfloor heating systems are a more affordable way to change the heating in your home when you renovate.

Shop our underfloor heating ranges online and in store and start reaping the benefits of an energy efficient home for years to come!
