Bathroom Tiles

Once you’ve found a few bathroom tiles you like, think about how they could work together across the room. A square tile, like Matrix can look clean and understated in a straight grid, or completely different in a chequerboard or striped layout. Smaller mosaic bathroom tiles are lovely for picking out a shower niche or basin splashback, while glazed Zellige-style tiles bring more variation to a wall as the light catches the surface. You don’t have to use lots of different designs either, as changing the size, layout or finish can be enough to give different areas of the bathroom their own feel. If you’re still working out how you want the whole room to come together, our guide to designing your dream bathroom has plenty more ideas.

It’s worth thinking about where each tile will be used before making your final choice. Some are suitable for walls, others can be used on floors, and some work across both, so always check the individual product details. Porcelain bathroom tiles are a practical option worth exploring for floors and busier bathrooms, with plenty of stone and marble effects if you want the look of a natural material with straightforward day-to-day care. For floors likely to get wet, the slip rating matters too, and our high slip resistant bathroom tiles are a useful place to look when extra grip underfoot is important.

What Type Of Tile Is Best For a Bathroom? ▾

Ceramic and porcelain bathroom tiles are both great choices for bathrooms, but the right option depends on where you’re using them. Ceramic tiles are a popular choice for bathroom walls, while porcelain tiles are denser and have low water absorption, making them particularly well suited to floors and areas exposed to moisture. Always check the individual tile’s suitability for your chosen wall or floor before ordering.

Can I Use The Same Tiles On My Bathroom Walls and Floor? ▾

Absolutely. Using the same tile on both the wall and the floor creates a seamless, contemporary look that can actually make a compact bathroom feel much larger. Just ensure the tile you select is rated for floor use, as some wall-specific tiles aren't designed to cope with foot traffic.

What Size Tiles Are Best For a Small Bathroom? ▾

This can come down to personal opinion, as there's no single size that works best for every small bathroom. While smaller formats are classic choices, using large format bathroom tiles can actually make a small bathroom appear more spacious. Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines, which creates a cleaner, less cluttered visual surface that tricks the eye into perceiving a bigger room.

Can Bathroom Tiles Be Used In Showers? ▾

Many bathroom tiles can be used in showers, but always check that the individual tile is suitable for the surface and area you’re tiling. The tiles themselves shouldn’t be relied upon to waterproof the shower: the correct substrate, preparation and waterproofing system need to be used where required behind the tiled finish. Shower floors also need a tile that is suitable for use underfoot in that environment.

Can Bathroom Tiles Be Used With Underfloor Heating? ▾

Yes, many bathroom tiles can be used with underfloor heating. Ceramic, porcelain and natural stone can all be suitable, making tiles a good choice if you want a warmer bathroom floor. The floor needs to be correctly prepared and the tiles installed with products suitable for your chosen heating system, so always check the requirements for both the tiles and underfloor heating before installation.

How Do I Clean Bathroom Tiles? ▾

Most ceramic and porcelain bathroom tiles are straightforward to keep clean. Use a pH-neutral tile cleaner with a soft, non-abrasive cloth or mop, and clean regularly to help prevent dirt, soap residue and limescale from building up. Natural stone and some specialist finishes need different care, so always check the cleaning advice for your chosen tile. For more tips, see our guide to cleaning bathroom tiles.
