How to care for porcelain tiles

Share

A key selling point for porcelain tiles is that they require a lot less maintenance than other tile materials due to their durable qualities and surface finish as they are often nano-sealed during manufacture.

However, all tiles need to be cleaned and maintained to keep looking their best. In this guide, we give you a top line view of how to look after your porcelain tiles.

Making sure surfaces are clean and hygienic should be a regular habit, and that includes porcelain tiles. Whether a polished or unpolished finish, here are some tips to keep your tiles looking their best.

The Initial Clean

Shockingly, 99% of faults with porcelain tiles stem from the wrong type of cleaning. This is why it’s so important to do it right from the start once the tiles are installed by performing an initial clean.

Once the tiles are laid, grout residue should be removed using a professional cleaner. This will not only ensure the tiles fully perform but will also protect their long-term appearance, whether polished or textured porcelain tiles.

We'd recommend using Fila's Porcelain Cement Residue Remover.
Grout Maintenance

Although porcelain itself doesn’t internally stain, the grout is susceptible to dirt which can end up making the whole surface appear dirty.

For the general cleaning of joints, Fila’s Grout Cleaner is effective at removing all kinds of stains from grout lines. To aid with day to day cleaning and further protect, we’d recommend applying a sealer like our Grout Sealer once the tiles are installed and cleaned.

A PH Neutral Cleaner

Depending on the footfall of your home and where they are laid, porcelain tiles may need cleaning fortnightly or every few days. A great regime, however, starts with the right tools, and Fila’s cleaners make light work of looking after porcelain tiles.

The Fila Multi Surface Cleaner is a gentle product that can be used for the everyday cleaning of flooring and tiles. As it's pH neutral it can also be used on ceramic, natural stone, encaustic tile, terrazzo, concrete, terracotta, vinyl, wood and laminates.

Stubborn Stains

There’s no doubt stains are frustrating especially on tiles but the Fila Multi Surface Stain Remover is an effective solution. It can be used on all types of tiles, apart from polished stone and acts as a 3-in-1 product: cleaner, stain-remover and wax-remover.

For the removal of unwanted stains on polished porcelain tiles, apply the product neat to the mark. Then simply allow a few minutes to act, then rinse with a cloth..
