Mixing adhesives, grouts or levelling compounds by hand can be both physically and time demanding. By choosing the right mixer you can ensure a lump free mixture with minimal effort.
Electric mixers make light work of mixing adhesives, grouts and levelling compounds, whilst variable speeds can help with mixing larger quantities of product. Manual mixers have smaller mixing paddles that can be attached to a corded or cordless drill. These are ideal for mixing smaller quantities of adhesive and grout or liquids and materials with a lower density.
Mixing paddles are designed for use with different materials, here we’ve listed which paddles work best with certain materials.
Allows the material to rise through the inner section of the paddle and fall on the outside. This motion is perfect for use with mortar, cement and adhesives.
The mixture flows both up and down depending on the movement of the paddle. This motion is ideal for resins and liquids as it reduces bubbles and lumps.
These paddles pull the material through the paddle head and rises through the outside. This type of paddle is recommended for low viscous materials such as paint, sealers, and plaster. This method of mixing dissolves any lumps without splashing.
This is where two paddles are used simultaneously generating a more intense mixture. This process is ideal for viscous materials such as mortars.
When using any kind of mixer it is recommended to have the suitable tools to hand:
PPE (personal protective equipment) – goggles, face mask, gloves.
Suitable mixing bucket.
Secondary bucket filled with cold clean water (to clean the paddle after use). If your mixer has a reverse mode, using this will help clean your paddle thoroughly.
Once you’ve got your kit together, combine the product to mix as per the manufacturer’s guidelines in the mixing bucket. Place the appropriate mixing paddle into the bucket ensuring the paddle is fully submerged to avoid any excess air getting into the mixture.
Using a slow speed start mixing and then gradually increase the speed, mix for the desired time (according to the manufacturer’s instructions) until you have the correct consistency. Once mixed, transfer the paddle to a second bucket of clean water and mix to clean the paddle.
