Extra-large porcelain tiles (larger than 60x60cm) are extremely heavy, weighing up to 60KG each, therefore they need to be handled using the proper lifting equipment to avoid damaging the tiles, catching a potentially sharp edge, or hurting yourself by lifting them incorrectly. In this guide, we talk you through the right equipment to safely lift and transport porcelain panels tiles.
A transport frame is a metal structure with suction cups attached, the frame provides a stable and rigid support unit for the tiles. With some tiles over 2.78m in length, the weight of the tile needs to remain equal across the tile surface whilst lifting to ensure it doesn’t break.
Ensure the system you are using is right for the weight you are lifting, the RUBI Easy Trans Plus system, for example, can support a maximum of 80KG.
When using a transport system and/or suction cups, you need to wipe down the tile face to remove any dust and dirt. The cups must be attached to the face of the tile, never the back of the tile.
To remove the transport frame, make sure the tile is stable and then support the weight of the frame, pressing the release valves of the suction cups in turn. Tiles should be removed from the frame individually.
Movement of the tiles should be kept to a minimum to help prevent damage, the tiles should be stored as close to the project area as possible.
Porcelain panels should be stored vertically at a 30˚ angle, the longest side resting on the floor. A non-slip material should be placed between the floor and the tile edge to protect the tile.
