Before laying any outdoor tiles, understanding your substrate is one of the most important decisions you will make. The method you use, the materials you need and even whether you can grout your patio all depend on what you are laying onto.
At 20mm thick, Everscape outdoor porcelain tiles are designed to work across multiple laying methods, and in this guide we show you how to lay them directly onto grass with a step by step guide and video walk through.
Why Lay on Grass?
Dry laying on grass allows the easy creation of paths and areas whilst allowing a more seamless transition between the surround landscaping. Laying onto grass is ideal for not only residential gardens and paths, but also for larger private and public parks and leisure areas. It’s a fast installation and no skilled labour is required.
How Do I Prepare The Substrate?
1. Arrange the tiles on the ground in their desired layout and location. If designing a walkway or stepping stones, consider the length of walking strides to determine the intervals between each tile.
2. Mark out the edges of each tile in the ground using a spade. This can be achieved by holding the back of the spade against the edge of the tile and driving it into the ground to leave a mark. Continue around all edges until the shape of the tile is outlined in the ground.
3. Remove the tile and dig out the marked area to a depth of approximately 60mm.
4. Add a layer of gravel with a particle size of 4mm to a minimum depth of 30mm.
How Do I Lay The Tiles?
1. Lay the tile directly onto the bed of gravel.
2. Tap the edges of the tile using a rubber mallet until the surface is level. Use a spirit level to ensure the flatness of the surface.
3. Continue the process of preparing the substrate and fitting each tile until the installation is complete.
Leave wider joints between the tiles to allow the grass to grow naturally between them.
