How to create a mitred step with the Sigma Jolly Edge

Share

What is the Sigma Jolly Edge?

The Sigma Jolly Edge is a cutting jib that enables you to create mitred finishes on tiles for steps and tiled profiles. Alternatively, with the use of the grinding disc, you can create bullnosed finishes, ideal for swimming pools. The jig allows you to use an angle grinder to create the perfect finish to tiles without the use of a trim. The 115mm diamond blade can be used with most standard 115mm hand-held angle grinders, cutting tiles between 5-20mm thick in a single pass and mitring angles between 40˚-50˚.

Tips on how to use the Sigma Jolly Edge

Only apply downward pressure on areas of the Jolly Edge which are over the tile, this will prevent the jig from lifting as you cut, producing a neater and professional edge.

For polished or delicate tiles, use masking tape to cover the 12cm from the tile edge. This will help prevent the jig from scratching the tile surface as it slides along the surface. If you’re using the water kit, then a cordless angle grinder must be used. If dry cutting, a lot of dust will be produced therefore it is advised to attach a vacuum to the jig. The cut mitre edge may have a rough finish, to smooth the area use a 200-grit rubbing block or finishing wheel. Be aware, creating a bullnose edge on a double loaded porcelain tile will create a visible two-tone edge where the porcelain has been fused together.

How to create steps or tile profile edges

1. Cut your angles using the Sigma Jolly Edge jig. Ensure the mitred edges are smooth and free from dust, debris, oil, or grease.

2. Apply Kerakoll Aquastop Nanosil to one edge, covering the full length of the mitred edge.

3. Compress the sealant and spread it along the edge with a plastic or metal scrapper dipped in soapy water for full coverage.

4. Press the two tile edges together and ensure the tiles are fully supported for a minimum of 24 hours whilst the sealant dries.
