If you haven’t been listening to ‘The Great Indoors’ podcast then you need to catch up! Interior Design gurus Sophie Robinson and Kate Watson-Smyth discuss all things design, trends and those design crimes we all love to hate!

In the world of tiles, new trends don’t come around very often but when they do they become a staple (ever heard of the Metro tile?!) and this year it’s the turn of the square! Once overlooked as old fashioned, it’s back and in favour with our favourite Interior Design gurus.

You may think a square tile a little boring but we’re going to show you that’s definitely not the case.

Colour

Inject some fun into your tile project with some colour, whether you choose something on a small scale like Matrix, Burbank, Batik or something a little more decorative like our Kinect range. When using colour, the tone of your grout is an important consideration. If you like the look of Kinect we’ve developed exclusive grout colours to perfectly match the tile so you can create a seamless look allowing the decorative pattern embossed into the tile to shine.

Pattern

Square tiles have a traditional connotation, as smaller tiles are more commonly associated with the Victorian era but a burst of pattern can be given a contemporary feel, it’s all in the styling.

Our Minton Hollins Chrysanthemum tiles are based on William Morris prints but we’ve pulled out the pastel shades in the pattern and paired it with an on-trend pink kitchen and a graphic style pattern on the floor to provide an Art Deco vibe.

Scaled Up

Square doesn’t necessarily mean small, some of our favourites like Carrara Honed and Orbitale are 60x60cm. These larger format squares have a contemporary feel whilst keeping grout lines to a minimal providing a more seamless aesthetic. This works particularly well for marble, allowing for a more luxurious look by using bigger slabs of material with consistent veining.

On The Floor

As you walk in you absorb the entire room so the ceilings and floors should be no exception to your interior scheme. Using square tiles on the floor helps set a grid for the eye and you can easily play with the proportions of a space using shapes. Smaller tiles can make a space feel bigger, particularly when using a plain, neutral tile like Multi-Tech (it also has slip resistant properties so perfect for that bathroom renovation you’ve been thinking about.) However, you can also experiment with pattern; our Archivo range features four different patterns so you can choose a design best suited to your scheme.
