Nostalgic Futurism

As interior trends evolve, looking back at elements of the past is a common theme in newer trends as they reimagine what was already popular. However, something new to be considered is to capture the mood of an era rather than its actual style.

Nostalgic Futurism is all about the excitement felt in the 1960s, the relaxing of social rules with the rise of the ‘teenager’ and a whole new demographic for marketers. New shapes and colours for interiors and of course fashions like the mini skirt! It was a time of looking forward with burgeoning new technology like the microwave, computers, satellites, and the growing excitement at the potential of extra-terrestrial life and space travel.

This trend captures the romantic nod to futurism using glossy textures and hyper-real colours that err on the cool side. The look is completed with boldly curved furniture, grid-like tiles, shiny chrome fixtures and natural beechwoods.

We’ve created a stunning colour palette of complementary bright shades with help from our partners Dulux to help encapsulate this trend.

The Colour Edit

Peachy pinks like Peach Blossom and the funky lilac Petal Perfection are balanced with a deeper Berry Smoothie pink, Warm Pewter, and a bold splash of Marine Blue. The vibrant cool tones work well with pale woods and shining chrome for a futuristic feel with a Scandi serenity, perfect for the modern home.

The Tile Edit

Here’s four ways we’d style the Nostalgic Futurism trend.

Minty Fresh

Sleek, icy, and glossy, the Matrix Spring Green tile sums up the Nostalgic Futurism trend to a tee. Pair this cool toned tile with warm neutrals to give it a homely vibe, Enis Ivory features subtle variation adding a nice contrast to the slick gloss of Matrix. Keep it warm with walnut wood and stone accessories and lots of greenery.

In the bathroom, stick to sparkling chrome fixtures and add a pattern on the floor, Atro Grey could work nicely in a sunny setting.

Light vs Dark

Play it cool with Flute in Bright Skies, this bold blue shade works well with other pastel shades, but you can also ground it nicely with natural colours like brown and griege. Here we’ve balanced out the contrast between light and dark by using a heavily veined marble top, matt black metal and a pop of zesty yellow on the door edge. The reeded elements in both tile and glass provide a modern touch whilst Prossimo on the floor helps widen the appearance of the en suite in its herringbone format.

The Hologram Effect

Nothing says futuristic like a holographic tile. The stunning Spectre range plays with texture by providing a mix of gloss, matt, and holographic decor tiles, we love this peachy pink tone with its icy hits of blue and violet as the light hits the tiles.

We’ve paired it with rose gold accessories to complement the pink tone and added warmth with a dark grey terrazzo sink. You could continue the grey terrazzo on the floor with Atro Grey or alternatively add more texture with a cement effect like Revolution, its XL size will contrast nicely with the slim wall tiles.

Harmonious Pastels

Mixing shades of raspberry, peach and icy blue can be a little daunting but with the right textures and metal accents it can be tied together harmoniously whilst retaining its fun and eclectic edge.

In this bathroom, the double sink has a matt finish and a plain top so the colour can do the talking. The Minton Hollins Country Rustic tile in Raspberry offers the perfect contrast with its rustic and glossy surface finish. The rest of the look is blended using a deep brass on the taps and decorative trims. Keep the lines clean with an edgeless mirror, plain cotton towels and minimal accessories.

To ground the colours, we’d recommend going for Suburbia Natural on the floor, it’s earthy brown base works perfectly with the collection of colours on the walls and its matt finish will complement the matt paint of the sink unit, avoiding too many different surface finishes in a small space.
