Connecting with nature allows us to reset and ground ourselves. Something we’ve lost is taking the time to relish the joy in the small things in our everyday lives. Having wow moments in the natural world has a positive effect on our mental wellbeing, that sense of joy and wonder is what we need to capture in our homes to have a consistently positive mental state.

Adding natural elements into our interiors become more popular in the 1970s with more house plants, jungle like floral and fauna prints and natural materials like marble and rattan. However, by the noughties, minimalism had swiftly erased these themes from our homes as we opted for clean sleek lines and minimal objects.

As the importance of sustainability and mental wellbeing has gained momentum, we have seen the renaissance of the outdoor to indoor philosophy. We’ve seen the trend for biophilic nature evolve over the last few years from bold dark greens and forest like house plants to a more refined neutral palette of limewashed walls and chunky wooden furniture.

Natural Neutrals

L-R: Dulux’s Tranquil Dawn, Cannon Ball, Dried Sage, Brass Buckle, Teal Voyage, Sweet Nougat

Numerous shades of green have been refined into muted tones of green-grey and brown with hints of teal and blush pink to represent all aspects of the natural world. Darker accent colours like Dulux’s Cannon Ball perfectly ground the sweeter toned neutrals providing a contemporary touch to the overall look. Natural materials create the foundation of the palette, with layers of airy cotton, linen, rattan and ceramics layered on top for hints of muted colour.

The Tile Edit

Tile Choices L-R: Aurelius Tumbled Travertine, Adalene Mocha, Atro White and Flute Sage, Pellier Sand, Astrea Sage

This trend is not just about colour, it’s also about texture. Natural materials such as stone and wood play a huge part in creating interest in an interior. You can also mix more modern elements into the look such as terrazzo and concrete to help balance the softness of the wood grain and tumbled stone.

Introduce tones of sage green with soft earthy browns and contrast them against clean off-whites, bold splashes of teal and matt black metals. Unexpected surface finishes like a satin matt or crackle glaze contrast nicely with more rustic materials lending a more modern aesthetic.

Styling The Look

Pinterest Inspiration L-R: Olive Trees, Wooden Bench, Pink Fridge, Bathroom Art, Teal Kitchen

The look is all about imperfect textures and natural looking patterns to create a visceral sensation. This could embody any kind of natural material like wood grain but also decorative natural stones like marble and onyx.

There is also an element of sustainability in this trend, thrifting your furniture and accessories is a great way to reuse natural materials in the home, it also helps to create a more relaxed unpolished aesthetic as you’re mixing styles and eras in the same space.

Perfect Finishing Touches

Shopping Inspiration L-R: French Connection Home Rattan Pantry, H&M Home Jute Rug, H&M Home Metal Coffee Table, Zara Home Seagrass Chair, Zara Home Mirror, H&M Home Stoneware Vase, Oliver Bonas Rattan Pendant

When choosing your accessories think about layering different finishes and textures together. A rough jute rug goes hand in hand with a soft limewashed wall whilst a structured rattan pendant light looks striking when opposite a malleable looking metal mirror.

Distressed woods, brown glass and misshapen ceramics are perfect decorative additions to any room in the home. Once you’ve found the balance between tones and texture, you can apply this theme as a common thread through the home to create a cohesive aesthetic.

Finish the look with a range of potted plants, from a cute plant stand to hanging branches of eucalyptus in your shower, there’s always an opportunity to add in flashes of natural greenery into the room to make it feel alive.
