In previous years sleek straight lines have dominated the interiors scene, whether it be mid-century or minimalist chic. But now we seek to break up those lines with comforting and cocooning rounded and curvaceous shapes whether it be art on the wall or your living room’s sofa.

The recent rise in biophilic design is a huge driver in this change, there are no straight lines in nature and therefore, to connect with nature, we need to introduce softer shapes into our homes too. We now need our homes to be comfortable and safe spaces with these enveloping shapes helping us to relax!

Not only are they good for the soul but a curved bar design or kitchen island is just as appealing to the eye as a graphic line is, perhaps more so by adding further dimension and interest.

There are lots of interesting ways to add curved features into your interior, the architecture of the room, how you paint it or simply how you style it. In this blog post we talk you through some of our favourites.

Architecture

Curved Archway, Kitchen Island

You can think of architecture in two ways, the literal building itself or the structure of a room. In the first instance, the building, you can add in open curved archways to interconnect rooms and create an open flow rather than closed rectangular doors.

For the structure of the room, this depends on what the room is used for, for example in a bedroom or living room you could build in curved storage or alcoves and in the kitchen, it could be a central island or bar area. Either way, it becomes a focal area of the room and part of the foundation to build the rest of your interior scheme around.

Pattern

Berkeley Charcoal, Flute Sage Decor

Adding pattern into the home is probably the quickest and easiest way to add some curved lines into your home. Fabrics are a great way to start and can add both colour and curve in one go, or if you’re looking for something a little more permanent then tiles are a great option for surfaces.

Tiles that feature a printed pattern can either be floral based and feel quite traditional or can be a modern abstract design that can sometimes feel quite rustic. 3D tiles however add pattern and texture in one. Our Flute tile has a reeded surface finish; it feels delicately curved whilst providing a bold modern design and available in a range of colours.

Paint

Painted Headboard, Painted Wall Shelf

If you like the idea of an archway but don’t want to commit to any structural changes then painting one, or any circular design, onto your walls can draw the eye in and even help zone different areas. You can also make a feature out of any wall hanging or shelving unit by painting behind it, an easy upcycle that can be updated again and again.

Furniture

Curved Sofa, Cobalt Blue Desk

Curved seating feels a lot more sociable than regular seating; it feels inclusive and draws people closer together. Adopt this in your living room with a beautiful, sculpted sofa or in your dining room with the use of bench seating (this is also a great way to get more seating into a smaller kitchen/diner).

If you don’t have the luxury of a separate office and want to create a statement zone, then look no further than a curved desk to get your creative juices flowing. For a classic feel that will adapt to other room styles over time, opt for a clean wood like walnut. However, if colour is your thing, then we love a statement table.

Sanitary Ware

Curved Bathtub, London Basin Company Bowl

Our bathrooms are a space to relax, pamper and unwind away from the rest of the world but they can sometimes feel a little clinical. Whatever your home’s style; you can create a level of cosiness in your bathroom by opting for rounded sanitary ware. It could be a statement tub or a rustic round sink bowl.

Storage

Curved Wardrobe, Alcove Bookshelf

Every home needs storage and although what you’re storing might be unsightly, it doesn’t mean your storage unit needs to be! Built in storage can often be the focal point of a bedroom or walk-in wardrobe so it needs to blend into the design of the room whilst also being aesthetically pleasing. A curved wardrobe or built-in alcoves add dimension and helps soften boxy rooms.

Lighting

Ceiling Lights, Retro Table Lamp

Artificial lighting can certainly add an ambience to a room, but structural lighting can also look great in the day light too. Curved lamps can add a retro and tactile feel to a space whilst larger chandelier styles can add drama and opulence.
