Mosaic tiles have a long history and mosaic tile design was popular even amongst ancient civilisations. There's certainly a clear reason for that. Mosaic tiles are uniquely beautiful with endless design options and styles for every room in your home. They're an incredibly versatile tile and they are great for tiling small spaces too whilst still adding a point of interest to your space.

What are mosaic tiles?

Mosaic tiles are traditionally small pieces of cut up tile used to create a larger pattern or design. Nowadays, most mosaics are smaller tiles attached together in a specific formation with the use of a mesh backing, making them quicker and easier to install. They come in a variety of patterns and designs which makes them a great focal feature for different rooms in your home.

As with all tiles, different mosaics have different technical requirements in terms of composition, room suitability and maintenance however, laying them is fairly universal so we have written an in-depth guide on how to lay mosaic tiles for more information on the steps you need to take to install your tiles.

Mosaic tiles bathroom design ideas

Shower shelves

Shower shelves are not only practical but also add a distinct design element to your space - perfect for a spa-inspired bathroom. Mosaics are perfect to add to this space because they can easily be cut to size using the mesh backing. Check out our other guide for more shower shelf inspiration.

Create a feature in your shower

You could make a feature in your shower if you're looking for a way to spruce up your bathroom and add an extra level of interest. If you are hoping to achieve a sleek, contemporary look, glass mosaics work particularly well here. Alternatively, if you are after a more rustic design, our mosaic natural stone tiles will work well.

Kitchen mosaic tile design ideas

Add a classic splashback

You can enhance your kitchen splashback using tiles which can be used to create an eye-catching feature. Not only do mosaics look great, but they also provide a convenient wipe-clean surface which can protect your walls from grease, water and other kitchen mess.

Create a tiled feature under your appliances

Another way we like to use mosaics is as a feature under appliances such as cookers and fridges. Our range of Victorian mosaic tiles can help you achieve this look and you can mix and match our range to create a customised pattern.

Create a Victorian-style entrance

A Victorian tiled hallway is not complete without traditional mosaic floor tiles. Victorian hallways traditionally use a monochrome palette, however, there are lots of ways you can modernise the design by using bold pastels or earthy tones. This helps to create a fresh interior whilst still nodding to the more traditional designs. For more mosaic flooring ideas, you can explore our Victorian tile design guide for more inspiration.

Mosaic tile design ideas for living room

Use them in alcoves

Many people think that mosaic tiles are best reserved for bathrooms and kitchens. However, we believe that there's a use for them in living rooms too. A fully tiled accent wall may be overpowering, however, strategically using mosaic tiles in alcoves and recesses can add real charm and character to the space.

Use them as a feature in a fireplace

One of the most popular places to use mosaic tiles in a living room is in and around a fireplace. Using intricate mosaics here can help to create and enhance the fireplace as a focal point of the room.

However, if your fireplace is functional, you should always check that the tiles are suitable for that use. If in doubt, we have a range of fireplace tiles which are suitable for use around log burners and multi-fuel stoves. You can find lots more tiled fireplace ideas in our guide.

Use them on a chimney breast

Instead of using mosaic tiles in your fireplace, you could also use them to create a floor-to-ceiling chimney breast. We like to opt for natural stone here as it helps to create a rustic feel to a space. Inspired by reclaimed bricks, our Split Face Autonno Blend tile features a natural slate look blending earthy tones and textures.

What colour grout for mosaic tiles?

The beauty of mosaic tiles is that they come in so many colours and designs, meaning they can work with pretty much any colour of tile grout you please. Going for a neutral shade such as grey or cream will allow your mosaics to pop. Alternatively, you can try colour drenching by matching your grout to the colour of the mosaic tiles.

Browse our range of mosaic tiles and try them in your home using our Design Your Home visualiser by uploading a photo of your space and using the filters to find your favourites. You can also get free delivery on all sample orders giving you extra confidence before you buy.
