As the winter season approaches, a working fireplace is a bonus when the colder weather sets in, in this blog post we show you how to modernise a fireplace with some fireplace tile ideas and how to decorate a fireplace for Christmas.

Tiled Fireplace Ideas

Rip out the gubbins

If you have a chimney breast but not a working fireplace then make a cool feature out of the alcove as it can still be a pretty focal point for your living space.

Take inspiration from this renovated fireplace and stick to a monochromatic theme for a minimalist modern setting. Our Victorian Flooring Darlington tile is the perfect dupe for this awesome black and white geometric design.

Pair the look with Mora White on the floor, if you can’t paint the original floorboards, and Heritage by Dulux Linen White on the walls. If you like the Brutalist look, opt for a plain grey concrete wall but if you want more of a Mediterranean flair then paint the wall white or cream. Dress the walls with some trailing jasmine, the vines look pretty but the delicate white flowers smell delicious too. Finish the look with some mid-century style furniture for a relaxed indoor-outdoor look.

The log burner

Exposed brick is a great way of adding texture to your fireplace, if you’re not lucky enough to have uncovered and restored the original brick, you can fake it with our Hartley Old Red tile! With a log burner you can also get creative with the hearth (if it’s the right type of stove and the correct distance away according to regulating standards). We’d always recommend a porcelain tile as it’s much more durable and Stello White is the perfect dupe for this beautiful living room.

Complete the look by using a beautiful grey on the walls, Pebble Grey from the Heritage by Dulux range is a good one.

The rustic renovation

A lot of Victorian fireplaces are quite narrow and now purely aesthetic as we don’t burn coal in an open fire like they did. This means that a lot of them need cleaning up but when you do, the grates are stunning. If you’re looking to create a more rustic country vibe, add a stained wood mantel or surround and opt for some handmade looking tiles, this mismatched pattern can be easily replicated with our Archivo range.

Keep the rest of the room minimal with soft flowing fabrics like linen and add a touch of colour on the walls, Heritage by Dulux’s Pale Olivine would work well with the Archivo colour palette.

Go big or go home

A wall to ceiling tiled chimney breast might sound a bit much but with the right elements coming together it can look really chic. Natural stone is definitely the way to go, providing texture with a retro feel. Whether it be a quaint country cottage or an alpine resort, we love this rustic vibe and it can be achieved using a split face tile, you butt them up so no grout lines are needed and the variation in the pieces are stunning, simply pick a colourway to suit your scheme!

If you don’t want to all be about your new fireplace, make sure to match your wall colour to your chosen tile colour, and paint the ceiling too, this will help cocoon the space and make it feel cosy in the winter months. Big artwork on adjacent walls will also help maintain a balance in the room.

Built in and fancy

If you’ve got high ceilings and like the ultra-modern vibe, a flush chimney breast that goes floor to ceiling is a great option if you want a built-in style fire. Go metallic on the outside or if you want to go super luxe, try a marble like Emerale or Carrara.

Finish the look with a concrete effect on the floor, and pair with soft cotton or linen sofas in a muted colour palette. Lots of natural light is ideal but if you can’t achieve this, fake it by using a lighter colour palette and cleverly positioned mirrors and of course ‘daylight’ coloured artificial lighting for those darker days.

How to decorate a fireplace for Christmas

It depends on the type of fireplace you have but decorating it for Christmas is relatively easy and a great way to draw a focus in the room, especially if you don’t have or want a tree in that room. A great place to start for some inspiration is of course Pinterest. Search for ‘Christmas fireplace decor’ and a plethora of inspo comes up! Here’s a few of our favourites:

The garland

The bigger the better! Whether it be real or faux, a garland can be as dramatic as you can be creative. If you like Scandi simplicity then go for simple leaves and natural texture like twigs, various types of greenery and maybe some spices and dried orange. For full on glamour, add in big baubles, stunning glassware, or even tasteful lights.
