Dressing Your Home For Christmas

Christmas can be a tricky time of year to celebrate the holidays in style whilst remaining true to your interior or home’s heritage. In today’s blog post, we break down some interior styles and how to rework them to include a little Christmas magic, hopefully this mini shopping style guide will see you through the season of joy.

Heritage

There’s something very classic and British about heritage style and this is amplified during the holiday season. Victorian and Georgian style is the epitome of Christmas chic and if you’ve got the original features then it’s the perfect time to really dress them up and celebrate them.

If you’ve got a large hallway then consider having a tree in this space to show off the room’s proportions and draw the eye into the home. For anything classic we’d recommend Cox & Cox, great investment pieces that won’t go out of style. For a true heritage feel, stick to muted tones like mossy greens, burnt reds and midnight blues, perfect with that neutral interior decor and statement flooring.

Simplicity

Whether you love an all-white scheme, are an advocate of minimalism or like the natural style of Scandi interiors then a simple Christmas is the one for you. Bare woods, lots of texture and warm shades of white layered with natural greenery.

For those looking for a natural looking Christmas theme, The White Company is a one stop shop. From naturally textured ornaments, galvanised metal and pared back decorations to wonderfully scented candles that will bring the outdoors in for the festive period.

Contemporary

A more eclectic take on the holidays means a less curated space and one that brings lots of elements together for a little culture clashing, for example a frozen prawn tree ornament ala Lucy Williams or a tinsel revival. It’s all about colour, clashing and having a bit of fun!

For a wide variety of trinkets shop around in small boutiques or quirkier retailers like Liberty of London, Paperchase, Rockett St George and Oliver Bonas. There’s no theme to follow so just pick up the pieces you like the most. If you find a common colour thread amongst your choices, carry that into your order decorations around the home and even your table setting.

Sustainable

There’s something to be said for making an investment in your Christmas decorations so you can use them over and over again but we know this isn’t always the most practical option in terms of storage and well, we can get bored of the same theme every year can’t we!

Why not try to incorporate as many sustainable elements to your usual Christmas as you can. Glass baubles, ceramic ornaments, eco-friendly LED lighting (a little carbon offsetting might be in order!) and of course a vegan lunch. You can even forage in your garden for some natural foliage.

Handmade

Kirstie Allsopp has championed the handmade Christmas for a few years now and we’re huge advocates of it, however time is short for a lot of us and sometimes you need to cheat a little. So, why not do a little extra time shopping on places like Etsy and Ebay to find handmade goodies for your home, just not made by you! It’s also a great way to support small business at this time of year.

Think decorative patchwork, crochet chic and some origami magic. Thinking about the gifts as well? We’d recommend Fleur De Force’s gift guides over on YouTube, specifically her one supporting small businesses.
