Over the first 12 months of the COVID-19 pandemic we saw wildlife start to recover, the halt in most human disturbance, traffic and pollution being the drastic change required. But as we get our lives back on track, what can we do at home to continue the wildlife around us to prosper?
A quick win is the garden, according to the Office for National Statistics, only 1 in 8 British households don’t have a garden which means there’s a huge amount of green space available to make a difference to our wildlife population.
In this blog post, we explore the best ways of renovating your garden to make it family functional, a place for entertaining, a place to relax and of course, a place to help nature thrive.
The ideal starting point of any garden renovation is a patio, perfect for taking your garden from day to night with sun lounging to dinner parties. The Everscape range of specialist outdoor tiles are made of vitrified porcelain meaning they can withstand the elements as well mould and staining. With a variety of ways to fit the tiles, they really can transform any outdoor space.
Even the smallest of outdoor spaces can be transformed for better use. The country courtyard is the perfect area for a small patch of wilderness, create a pristine path through a myriad of wildflowers that attract bees, to an attractive patio area with gravel in between the slabs. A metal bench or bistro set is ideal for a sunny lunch or morning coffee.
Too small for flowerbeds? Pot up some planters with Cosmos Apollo, Dahlias and Erysimum and the bees and butterflies will be kept happy.
In built up areas it’s important to get the right balance of hard landscaping and greenery. Often smaller areas, compared to countryside gardens, city gardens require a bit more planning for long term gain.
Planting a couple of trees is a good place to start. Not only, when grown, will they help reduce your green space being overlooked by the neighbours, but some trees have been proven to help reduce pollutants in the air. Silver Birch, Yew and Elder trees have been proved to be the most effective along with Pines, Conifers, and Cypresses.
If you’re lucky enough to have a larger garden, then you can create a more extensive patio area that is ideal for home entertaining. We love the marble effect of Everscape Marbex, recreate the glamour and opulence of the Italian Riviera without them discolouring over time as the porcelain is stain proof.
With a greater expanse of tile, your garden will become hotter in the summer months compared to those comprised mainly of plants and grass. It’s therefore important to ensure you keep plenty of water around for birds and hedgehogs during the warmer days of the year. If you’ve space for a water feature, it can double up as a bird bath.
Create some height in your garden by building a pergola, in the hotter months of the year you can add a canvas on top to create shade in a garden that gets full on sun for most of the day. If you don’t like the look of the structure, soften the harsh edges by using climbing plants. Ivy, Clematis, and certain varieties of Rose are excellent climbers, creating cover for birds and insects too.
Everscape Sandstone provides a modern touch with its contemporary grey shading, the perfect outdoor patio tile for a sun worshipping garden. Add some low-lying planters to counterbalance the tall pergola structure and deck your patio with lots of pots to help break up the expanse of tile.
If you’ve got grass, let it grow a little longer before getting the mower out of the shed, not only does it give you a break over the warmer months, it encourages daisies and white clover to flower providing a great source of nectar. Whilst you’re at it, forget the weeding too, nettles, buttercups and daises are great sources of food for butterflies and moths.
Build an insect hotel, a hideaway for bugs and birds. Pick up some hints and tips from the National Trust on how to build one for your garden.
Add in a small pond, if you’ve got a partial shade/sun spot then a pond would be a great way of boosting wildlife. Add some steps in and out, fill with rainwater and include a couple of waterlilies to create the perfect eco-balance.
A compost heap will not only recycle your garden waste and enrich your soil, but it will also provide a haven for worms, woodlice, and other species like frogs.
Allow animals to connect different habitats together and move around by leaving small gaps under your garden fence. It will encourage hedgehogs and frogs to explore your garden.
