Typically, tiles are cold underfoot all year round and if you don’t want to add underfloor heating to your renovation list then a good alternative might be to look at other flooring options that aren’t so cold. A good alternative is Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT), they look more like laminate but have some of the great properties of floor tiles such as water resistance and surface texture for a realistic finish.

When it comes to choosing bathroom LVT flooring, two important points to consider are the fitting system and underlay. At Topps Tiles, all of our Luxury Vinyl Tiles come with either a 2G or 5Gi click system and every range includes integrated underlay, giving you a straightforward way to install flooring without glue or nails.

The 2G click system works with an angled click, while the 5Gi click system uses a push-down motion to lock the planks together. Both give you a tight, stable finish that can be fitted without specialist tools, making them suitable for DIY projects as well as professional installations.

Integrated underlay is where the everyday benefits really come in. It cushions each step, reduces noise in busy households, and saves the extra time and cost of laying underlay separately. In bathrooms, where comfort underfoot and a secure finish are key, this gives LVT a clear advantage.

Because all of our LVT is fully waterproof and compatible with underfloor heating, it’s perfectly suited to bathrooms where moisture and changing temperatures are part of daily life. That means you can choose the style you love with complete confidence in its performance.

Bathroom LVT flooring ideas

For the bathroom, when deciding what style of LVT, it should be the same process as any other floor covering by considering: how does it suit the room, the overall aesthetic and the feel of the room.

Smaller Bathrooms

For example, if you have a particularly small space then a minimal, non-fussy pattern in a neutral tone is usually best as it will make the space feel bigger. And by pattern we don’t just mean repeating geometric shapes, the printed texture of LVT also counts as a pattern. You can get heavily grained wood effects and dramatically veined marble effects, ideally, for a small bathroom you’d want a simple, mottled stone design to provide some texture and authenticity without becoming a statement.

Darker Bathrooms

For darker bathrooms with little natural light available, try using a lighter LVT on the floor. A light neutral will help bounce around the light even though LVTs typically have a matt surface finish. The key is then to build elements of this lightness into the rest of the room, so the floor doesn’t feel disjointed to the rest of the space. You could do this by introducing a white stone basin, chrome fixtures and a lighter glossy tile on the walls. Also, think about your accessories, sticking to clear or lightly frosted glass and clean and simple shapes will all help provide a lighter space.

North facing bathrooms

Like the advice for darker bathrooms, north facing bathrooms could have plenty of natural light in terms of window space but it will predominantly feel dark and dingy without any warming sunlight. So, this is where colour correction comes into play when styling your room. Yellow, warm beige and pink based colours are ideal for north facing rooms so opt for a warm toned wood effect in this space to help create a gentle, warming glow. Complete the look with warm LED lighting and dusky pink accessories to balance the yellow.

Vinyl flooring ideas for a minimalist bathroom

If you prefer a minimalist interior style then adding a wood effect floor to the bathroom is key, not only does it add that all-important texture to stop the neutral space looking flat, but it also adds a touch of warming colour. To toe the line, a warm toned grey is a great choice, it will blend perfectly with your neutral scheme. Choose a longer sized plank LVT and preferably one with a simpler grain.

Here we’ve paired Galloway Grey with Linear Calacatta and then balance the look with simple gold taps, a rounded tub and wood accessories. Adding a little greenery into the space will bring some life and balance the different tones in the room.

Vinyl flooring ideas for a cosy bathroom

As bathrooms often feel quite clinical, given the smooth white sanitary ware that’s commonly used, injecting some warmth into the space is a great way to make it feel cosier. Opt for an oak replica LVT tile which has plenty of interesting grain, this usually gives you more variety in tone to choose from when the grain is busier, you can then pull these out to create harmony in the rest of the room. For example, the deeper grain links to the wooden sink unit and the lighter, caramel in the grain works well with the Torrano Gold wall tile. The use of brown glassware and rich greenery helps blend the look together.

Vinyl flooring ideas for small bathrooms

When you have a more compact bathroom then you can use your tiling to maximise the room’s proportions. A lighter floor with an abstract pattern, like this LVT Calacatta style marble, will draw the eye around the room creating the illusion of space. For height, tile vertically. The Skandi Slat Decor tile is ideal for this as it has all the benefits of a porcelain tile but it looks like wood panelling, adding warmth and depth to the room.

Vinyl flooring ideas for a traditional bathroom

If your interior taste lies more on the traditional side, but you still want the comfort of LVT flooring, then a deeper grained wood effect is the way to balance the look. Here we’ve used Brada Storm which has a muted matt finish, contrasting it with the high gloss of the Zellica White wall tile. The framed wooden cabinets and stylish roll top bath exude luxury and feel classically timeless.

Vinyl flooring ideas for an ensuite bathroom

As en suite bathrooms usually lead on from a carpeted bedroom, sometimes a plainer floor is better to minimise the contrast between rooms and help the flow of the space. A smooth LVT that looks more like a tile is a great go-between, particularly if you want to use it elsewhere upstairs, such as a walk-in closet. Although it’s a lighter colour, you won’t get the harsh lines associated with a tile’s grout and the LVT’s hard scuff resistant wear layer should ward off any wear and tear over time. For a relaxed spa vibe, opt for lighter woods like pine or beech and stick to matt finishes around the room. A fluted glass shower screen will only elevate your bathroom!
