What is laminate wood flooring?

Share
Laminate is typically made up of four layers of wood fibre. The individual layers are pressed at a very high temperature and pressure to form a thin plank. The ultra stable core is a high-density base which is then covered in a decorative paper, this provides the authentic look and feel of wood. Finally, a wear layer is added on top, this provides water resistance, stain resistance and general scuff resistance. Our laminate ranges have a AC4 rating which is a highly durable wear rating for domestic homes.

This would be it for cheap laminate flooring, however our laminate ranges also have a power sealed finish which is a two-pass process to protect all the edges of the board against moisture. Each plank also has an IXPE underlay built in, this 2mm high dense foam underlay is mould and mildew resistant as well as offering a level of sound absorbency and softness underfoot.

This built-in underlay, coupled with an angle tight click system, makes our affordable laminate flooring ranges extremely easy to install yourself, helping you to maximise your budget for the rest of your room makeover.
Is it waterproof?
Laminate flooring is classed as water resistant; this means that it can handle a certain amount of water before it becomes damaged which means it can be used in kitchens and bathrooms. However, if you’re looking for a fully waterproof flooring then we’d suggest using a wood effect tile or LVT wood flooring instead.
What are the benefits of laminate flooring?
Laminate flooring is highly durable, and our ranges are water resistant so they can be used throughout the home. They are an affordable flooring option which are easy to install and keep clean.

If you’re unsure about what flooring type to choose for you needs, check out our flooring types guides which compares LVT, Laminate and Engineered Wood in more detail.
What should I look for when choosing laminate flooring?
Firstly, you should ensure it has a good enough wear layer and thickness for the room use, as well as the room suitability. All our laminate flooring is suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, hallways and living areas (lounge, dining room, bedroom and office).

The second feature to look for is water resistance. Then, it’s really about aesthetics, as laminate is a replicative material it only mimics real wood, so quality of finish is important. Make sure to choose a range that is embossed, or even better, registered embossed, as this will feel more like wood and therefore feel more authentic in your home.
