How often should I be cleaning my tile grout?

Many people only notice grout needs cleaning when it’s too late but with a regular cleaning routine your grout can look good for a lifetime. It’s recommended to clean the tile grout at least once per day using BAL Micro-shield Plus.

If you have tiles in your bathroom, make sure you wipe it dry after use to avoid forming mould and mildew. For kitchens tiles, use BAL Micro-shield Plus and a cloth to wipe it every day. In so doing, you eliminate any food splashes that may form on the grout.

Once you clean the tiles on a daily or a weekly basis depending on your preference, you will be surprised how long your tiles and grout can stay in good condition.

How to seal your grout

A grout sealer protects all wall and floor cementitious grout joints from dirt, cooking oils and general grime pro-longing the overall look and the actual life of the grout.

To apply to your grout, firstly spray the grout protector directly onto the grout joint whilst holding the bottle approximately 10-15cm away from the surface area, the nozzle enables application to be easily and safely applied in an enclosed space wall or floor.

Working in small areas (approx. 1m²), use a sponge or brush to aid the product’s penetration over the grout lines. Remove any excess product or smears from your tiles within a five minute period using a clean cloth. Any dry residues that were not removed during application can be removed with Fila’s Porcelain Cement Residue Remover, diluted 1:30.

Do not wet the surface for the first 24 hours after treatment. Once sealed use BAL Micro-shield Plus to maintain the look of your grout.

How should I clean tile grout?

For day to day tile and grout maintenance use an alkaline tile cleaner with Microban antimicrobial action such as BAL Micro-shield Plus. Its fast-action formula removes grease, dirt and stains from all types of wall and floor tile.

Formulated to maintain tile joints with BAL grouting, BAL Microshield Plus leaves hygienically clean surfaces and helps inhibit growth of mildew and black mould, providing added hygiene protection for bathrooms, showers and food consumption areas.

If you need to clean your grout more thoroughly, whether it’s a spring clean or because it hasn’t been adequately protected, simply apply a grout cleaner directly onto the grout. Leave for a few seconds then scrub with an abrasive sponge or brush whilst being careful not to damage the surface of the tile then rinse thoroughly with plenty of clean water.

Depending on the level of dirt or stains it may take more than one application to achieve the desired results. Always read the instructions to ensure the product is suitable to use in the desired area.

What should I avoid when cleaning my tile grout?
Most people don’t check to see what’s in their cleaners, which often leads them to buy cleaners with harmful ingredients. For instance, some cleaners contain a high pH or are acidic, which will only make your grout fragile or more porous. Weak grout will soil faster, and you’ll be back to the cleaning process sooner than expected. Harsh chemicals drastically reduce the life span and durability of grout, so you should always use a specially formulated grout cleaner such as BAL Micro-shield Plus or Fila’s Grout Cleaner.
What products should I use to clean my grout if I have natural stone tiles?
If you’ve chosen polished marble, granite, travertine, limestone, slate or Sandstone tiles then it’s recommended to use a specialist cleaner for acid sensitive surfaces. How to clean grout off

I’ve gotten grease marks on my grout; how do I clean them off?
For greasy marks, simply spray a light film of BAL Micro-shield Plus across the area you wish to degrease and leave for 1-2 minutes, then wipe off with a clean cloth.
