Whether you choose to tile or use laminate bathroom panels is really down to two factors, budget and the space you’re renovating.
Bathroom panels can be fitted over existing tiles and walls with a bow of up to 6mm making them extremely versatile for older properties. You won’t have the cost of removing the old bathroom tiles and making the substrate good as you would with regular porcelain or ceramic wall tiles.
The laminate panels are designed to be slotted together with a unique Hydrolock system making them 100% waterproof without the need for grout lines.
However, you are limited to certain sizes for each panel and they do require a PVC seal around a bathtub (if required) which can be less aesthetically pleasing than a bead of silicone sealant.
There are a lot of style advantages to using tiles, with more inspirational options available not only in tile finish, format and size but also the laying pattern you choose.
Although grout requires a little upkeep, when installed correctly and using the best products, like BAL’s Micromax3 Eco, mildew etc. are no longer an issue as your grout ages due to its anti-fungal properties. Using a coloured grout can also add another stylish finish to your tiles, complementing or contrasting with the rest of your scheme depending on your taste.
Another stylistic consideration is texture, porcelain and ceramic tiles have a natural texture to them. If they are a stone or wood effect, the texture of the tile is often synchronised to the print of the tile to create the most realistic finish. Laminate wall panels are currently a flatter print making them slightly less realistic up close.
So, what are your options? If you’re on a tighter budget or don’t have the time to properly prep the area then opt for shower wall panels, if you have the time and money then go for a tile for added style and texture.
