Cosy Home

The depth of winter can often be a difficult time, we were once built to hibernate but in the fast-paced modern world we don’t allow ourselves the opportunity to slow down. We want to feel warm and cosy, comfortably oblivious to the dark nights, brisk frosty mornings and seemingly endless grey days!

The easiest way to navigate the colder months is to spruce up your interior, create a cosy nest full of deep warm neutrals, soft cocooning fabrics and interesting textures like wood grain and frosted glass.

The Cosy Home trend is one to pull out every January, the juxtaposition of comforting neutrals and an uncluttered space is the perfect balance for the New Year which you can continue to build on throughout the season.

Decadent Neutrals

Beige is definitely back, but it’s much more interesting than the days of manilla madness (aka the late 90s…). It’s now layered with decadent chocolatey browns, velvety yellows, pink tinged ivory, and a zing of sumptuous teal. The palette feels like an exciting box of tasty chocolates, perfect for hunkering down in front of the fire each night.

The Tile Edit

When translating cosiness into tiles, it’s all about capturing the right colour and texture.

The luxury of marble is epitomised with Torrano’s flecks of gold veining, it pairs perfectly with the warm beiges, deep red toned chocolates and teals. For all out decadence, why not mix together dark tones of chocolate and lighten it up with soft touches of beige fabrics or gold hardware. Stadia Storm’s dramatic size and veining pairs perfectly with the understated elegance of Andira Smokey Brown.

If you want something a little more subtle then build various beige tones together using both paint and tile, Syren Natural Linen is a great way to add interest to a neutral space with its delicate scallop shaping and high gloss finish. You can then build on the look by adding in contrasting shades of walnut, teal and mustard with the use of accessories.

Styling It Up

With any neutral palette, you can add interest into a room by playing with the proportions of your space, shapes and of course texture.

When thinking about furniture, opt for more rounded, soft or blurred edges so a shaped wood or a velvet sofa. This will provide a cocoon-like feel and envelope you into the space creating a more peaceful vibe.

If you have a short ceiling height, either paint the ceiling the same shade as the walls or go only a couple of shades lighter within the same tonal family, this will help create a seamless space which will in turn feel larger. If you are lucky enough to enjoy high ceilings in your home, you can go bold by painting the ceiling darker than your walls to help bring the height down or simply opt for a dramatic light that is hung slightly lower than expected, this will instantly reduce the height of the room and feel cosier.

With plenty of natural light, go darker on the walls and then lighter on the furniture to create a nice contrast, but if you have a naturally darker space, create features with darker colours like a teal reading nook or panelled alcoves.

If you’re a little scared to use brown, opt for darker furniture and fabrics and then create a contrast with lighter beige walls, you can then blend the two together using fabrics and accessories, like a delicate mustard curtain or a brass lamp fitting.

Finally, when dressing your space, add in a little life with some greenery, but make your chosen foliage feel a little wintrier, perhaps pine branches, eucalyptus or dried flowers.

Keep your furniture sleek and minimal. Mix bold velvets with cosy boucle for seating, lots of dark woods like mahogany or walnut for any tables and mirrors and make a statement with the lighting, a warm lighting scheme is essential. You can add additional interest by choosing unexpected shapes or textures like this reeded curvy mirror or add a unique touch with antique furniture, mixing styles from different eras will help give your scheme longevity and personality.
