A colourful kitchen is not only incredibly fun to design, but it is also the perfect way to balance style and practicality.

However, while it can be tempting to just opt for your favourite colours, remember that you will be using this space daily; so go for a colour scheme that you are happy to live with for a while. It’s also good advice to select a scheme that complements the type of kitchen you are decorating - if it’s a compact kitchen, don’t go for colours that may darken the space (unless that’s the mood you are aiming for!).

Whatever, you have in mind, here are some of our favourite colourful kitchen design ideas that will help you transform your kitchen.

Pops Of Colour

Using tiles to add a pop of colour to your kitchen is a great way to inject a sense of playfulness into the space.

In this look, we have opted for the Metro Blush tile and have used a contrasting grout to make the colour pop. To elevate the tiles even more, we have used dark kitchen cabinets to allow the pink tiles to be the source of colour in this kitchen.

If you are after a more unique colourful kitchen idea, consider pairing contrasting colours like a blue tile and an orange grout to create a showstopping design. For a more subtle approach to creating a bright kitchen, use colourful trims such as our Matrix Collection.

Accessories are also a great way to inject colour into your kitchen. To complement the colour scheme of this marble effect tile, we would recommend opting for hot pink saucepans and painting a couple of cupboards in an ice-blue shade to bring depth into spaces that lack dimension.

Colour Blocking

Adopting a technique called colour blocking is another way to create a bright kitchen. Colour blocking involves pairing two or more bold colours in a space. It is very popular in kitchen design and can easily be created in your kitchen by contrasting your paints with the cabinets and countertops.

In these bright kitchen ideas, we have opted to use blue and green tiles to inject a sense of calm into the space. By using these tiles on the walls, we have added some texture to the space to add visual depth and a sophisticated feel to the room.

For a sense of contrast, we have complemented the Lampas Peacock tiles with a light grout to emphasise the herringbone laying pattern of the tile. Another way to add a sense of visual and tactile intrigue is to opt for a classic rectangular tile with a surface texture like the ribbed Flute tile design.

Retro Cafe

If you are vintage at heart or a coffee connoisseur, these bright kitchen ideas are for you.

Our Minton Hollins and Matrix tiles are key to this design; the rustic look of the tiles is perfect for replicating the feel of a classic cafe. Available in a range of colours, use the tile as a canvas for colour or as a tool to incorporate colour into your kitchen.

In these looks, we have shown two ways in which square tiles can be used to create a colourful kitchen. The first colour uses a tonal look to create a serene, warm space and the second utilises contrasting colours for a retro inspired finish.

To stop bright tiles from feeling out of place and to create a sense of cohesion, consider adding picture frames that tie the colours together. If you don’t have coloured photo frames to hand, grab some leftover wall paint and get creative!

This colourful kitchen design is so easy to recreate and make your own, so give it a go.

Contrasting Colour

Plain tiles are anything but boring; paired in the right way, they can be an easy way to brighten up a room.

Teal zellige tiles set against a blush pink kitchen

In this kitchen look, we have used the Cadence Teal tile along the full width of a wall. The teal tiles on their own can bring a sense of darkness to a room, but to lighten this look we recommend pairing them with light kitchen cabinets. In this case, we have opted for salmon pink kitchen cabinets which pair seamlessly with the tiles to not only brighten the space but also inject colour and playfulness into the kitchen. To keep the look flush and balanced we have opted for a wood effect tile on the floor.

Play With Pattern

Patterned tiles are a great way to not only add colour to your kitchen but also add a sense of character and dynamism to the space. To avoid too big a statement, opt for a patterned tile that has a muted colour palette allowing for a more subtle way to incorporate colour into your kitchen.

Embrace Matching Surfaces

If you’ve fallen in love with a colour, why not apply it to all the surfaces in your kitchen? We’re talking about everything from the cabinets to the splashback, if you’re feeling particularly passionate about it you could even use it on the kitchen surfaces - the world is your oyster!

For this kitchen design, we have used tones of sage green throughout the space. The splashback has been created using our Metro Sage Green tile which has been complemented with an off-white grout to create a look that is striking, yet subtle. To carry this theme on and create a sense of cohesion, a lighter shade of sage green has been used on the kitchen cabinets. These similar tones create a flowing, calm look that is reminiscent of country living.

Don’t Neglect The Floor

When we think of ways to add colour to a kitchen, we often focus on the colour of the walls and cabinets, or even how to accessorise the space. While these are great ways to decorate a kitchen, they neglect the transformative impact that changing the flooring can have.

In this kitchen look, we have kept it simple and natural. The choice of the Quarry Red tile may be a more subtle way to use colour in your kitchen, but it still works to inject a sense of flair into the space. We have opted to pair the tile with white kitchen cabinets and fixings, yet for another colour ‘pop’ we have used pale yellow tiles for a kitchen splashback. The muted tones of these shades feels oddly neutral, ideal for those not ready to fully commit to a kitchen full of colour just yet.

A colourful kitchen design can make a real difference to the feel of your home. Waking up in the morning to make a coffee in a sunny yellow space impacts your day more than you realise. So don’t be afraid to play with colour in your interiors, with a few simple tips and tricks your home will be bursting with Bright Wonder.
