Modern bathroom ideas encompass a wide range of styles and trends that can be adapted to suit all kinds of space. A great bathroom design should be achievable for everyone, so we've partnered with interior website ufurnish.com to gather all of the best ideas in one place.

We’ve paired together key accessories with bathroom tiles and furniture ideas to create the ultimate bathroom experience for your home.

What is a modern bathroom design?

The term ‘modern’ in interior design refers to certain features prominent in the space. These include natural elements, including lighting, as well as a neutral palette, simple clean lines and practicality.

Modern interior design is a great starting point for your new bathroom, which is a space that needs to feel welcoming and relaxing yet practical for everyday use.

Here are our four modern bathroom ideas with a tile edit for achieving the look in your home.

Modern green bathroom ideas

Vanity Unit, Brass Shelving, Soap Dispenser, Towel Rail, Matrix Wilderness Green Tile

The colour green has been popular for a few seasons now and interest in the hue doesn’t seem to be waning. A darker shade of green is surprisingly versatile, working well in both heritage style and modern bathrooms alike.

Green accents feel luxurious and more modern then using it en masse. Little and often is the best way to style the colour. The streamlined vanity from Homary really suits a modern bathroom design. Add in splashes of brass or gold for a touch of luxury. For a truly modern finish, pair these fixtures with a concrete effect tile. Or, if you like something a little brighter, white or grey marble are also great options.

Below, you can see where we've paired dark green wall tiles with a gold-framed mirror, covered a wall in white tiles that feature dashes of green, and where light green textured tiles provide a calming backdrop to a wood effect floor and luxurious bath. Choose between tiles of different shades and patterns to find the right level of green to complement the rest of the bathroom.

Add metal accents to a neutral space

Black Mirror, Shower Shelves, Bin, Vanity Unit, Mora Oak tile

Matt black metal is a great way to modernise a bathroom and is extremely versatile. It works well with wood, concrete, or stone effect tiles. In the right colours, it can also work well with patterned tiles.

Keep your accessories square and streamlined for a modern bathroom style. We particularly love this Dunelm mirror. Finish the look with matching shower caddies or shelves, countertop basin vanity units, even the bin!

Our examples below highlight the variety of metal accents you could turn to. In one, an oak effect floor provides a warm, natural backdrop to the black metal bath taps and dark cabinet. We've also paired patterned tiles with bronze accents with a matt blank sink, and used dappled grey tiles to accentuate the black shower and tap fittings in our final showcase.

Wooden elements for a natural touch

Towel Rack, Bamboo Shower Caddy, Toilet Brush, Elevo Oak

Wood is a great grounding option, particularly if you like a minimalist all-white aesthetic, as it adds warmth and texture to a space. Adding wooden tiles to the floor is a popular choice. A wood effect porcelain tile like Elevo Oak is a great option for the bathroom as it’s easy to clean and can be used with underfloor heating.

Wooden elements can be added more sparingly to other bathroom designs with carefully chosen accessories. We love this towel rack and super luxurious toilet brush by Wayfair.

You can even carry on the theme in your shower with a bamboo shower caddy – this Habitat number is great if you like a chunkier finish.

Modern, wood effect finishes can look very different depending on the choices you make. To the left below, you can see how a lighter finish brings a natural look to a bathroom that otherwise has a lot of metal accents. In the centre, a grey wood effect tile completes the cool bathroom theme and allows sparingly installed patterned tile to stand out around the bath. On the right, we've used a deeper, richer wood colour to contrast with the otherwise white and neutral tones of the room's walls and fittings.

Luxury touches for your modern bathroom

Bath Tray, Glass Bottles, Bath Pillow, Vanity Unit

Even in a small bathroom, luxury is an easy design concept to achieve without spending huge amounts of money. The key is choosing the right textures. Streamlined clear acrylic, like this bath shelf from Homary, neutral coloured glassware, and accents of black and gold dress up any bathroom. The ideal backdrop is marble, or faux marble porcelain if you’re really on a budget. Alternatively, choose a tile with an interesting textural surface finish.

Lighting is also key to creating an opulent finish. You want something with a warm light – preferably diffused – so it creates a relaxing ambience. If you’re a bath person, adding some luxury oils, salts and a waffle bath pillow will further add to the spa experience.

Our first room showcased here shows a close up of the same gorgeous porcelain tile featured above. Its marble-like look is layered and reminiscent of ancient stone. The second bathroom design shows a different approach to a marble-style tile. Here, it creates a neutral backdrop that contrasts with the dark floor, but the grey swirls give it a touch of elegance and interest that a plain tile lacks.

Finally, we took a completely different approach with a third tile to showcase the power of varied texture. The Flute tiles are understated yet distinctive, and allow the rich colours of the other installations to stand out.

How to choose modern bathroom tiles

Throughout this article, we've shown you different bathroom tile ideas that fit a clean, modern aesthetic. Whether they're added to the floor, the walls or both, your tiles create a backdrop for the other fittings and accessories that you add to your bathroom.

That's why so many of the tiles we've shown you here are neutral in colour. Neutral tones give you the freedom to add splashes of colour that really pop elsewhere in the bathroom. If you've invested in a rich green vanity cabinet or dark, metal towel rack, neutral flooring and wall tiles will allow them to take centre stage.

The white Metro tiles shown above illustrate perfectly how modern tiling can be simple and effective as it promotes the clean lines and contrasting colours used elsewhere in the room. With so many textures, patterns and finishes to choose from, you won't struggle to find something that adds a touch of subtle class to your theme. Take a look through our full range of bathroom tiles to find the perfect backdrop to your modern design.
