Using coloured tiles can be a little daunting for some so if you want to err on the side of caution why not add a burst of colour through your grout choice instead? We look at ways in which coloured grout can complement your tiling whilst making a statement.
In simple terms, a coordinating grout (one that almost matches your tile colour) will help create a seamless and blended approach and is most commonly used in country, classic and muted interior schemes. A contrasting grout, a colour opposite to your chosen tile colour, will emphasise the edges of your tiles and sometimes create a more modern and graphic finish.
Grout colour is a great way to change the feel of your tile choice, perhaps you love a crackle tile but don’t want it to look too old fashioned next to your streamlined kitchen units. Or maybe you’ve chosen a modern subway tile and want to give it more of a rustic edge. Using a coloured grout is also a great way to inject the latest interior trends into your space without dedicating a huge portion of your budget to something you might want to change in a couple of years’ time.
White Tiles White Grout
White tiles with white grout can look really chic and minimal, with the right tile. For a modern feel opt for something slim and rectangular to add to that minimalist feeling.
White Tiles Grey Grout
Softer than a dark grout but much more user-friendly than a white grout, grey is the perfect solution for a kitchen splashback as it will keep looking cleaner for longer. Large white tiles often look better with a grey grout as it will frame the tile.
A great example is white metro tiles grey grout, the subtle difference in tone emphasises the classic bevelled edge but it feels more modern and warming than a white grout.
White Tiles Black Grout
Black grout against a white tile creates a very contemporary and graphic feel, perfect if you’re wanting to highlight a unique laying pattern like a block herringbone. White tiles with black grout work well in a bathroom shower where you have the soft water breaking up the graphic lines.
If you can’t envisage what your space will look like, find pictures of white tiles with black grout in different laying patterns to see how it affects the look of the tile.
White Tiles With Coloured Grout
White tiles with a dark grout like brown will provide a more rustic finish, must softer than black and more colourful than grey, it’s the perfect in-between option for those seeking a contrast with a softer side.

When choosing a black tile, the basic principles are the same as a white tile however, a coordinating grout (black tiles with black grout) will make the space feel smaller as the black tile will appear as a larger block of solid colour. In contrast to this, a black tile with a white grout line can look quite harsh but works really well if you’ve got a shaped tile, like a scale or hexagon.
