Black is a great neutral base for any contemporary interior scheme, but it can be a little daunting as it must be used right to get the best results. Here we talk you through some black bathroom ideas to achieve the ultimate and stylish modern black bathroom.
We’ve trawled Pinterest to get some inspiration and pulled out some key themes that we thought worked well to bring out the best in black. Texture, wood, and brass being just some of them. We’ve compiled 10 ways to effectively bring black into a modern small black bathroom including some wet room ideas for the ultimate space saving designs.
Whether you’re investing in black tiles, paint, or accessories it’s key to pair black with the right materials to avoid it looking too dark or oppressive so these fail-safe options will give you a better idea of how to work with the shade.

Black tile bathroom ideas revolve around the use of texture to help create depth and interest with such a dark colour. Here, in this example from Architectural Digest, they’ve used texture to break up the different tones of black, the rustic zellige-inspired wall tile helps bounce around the light at the top of the room, leading into the white portion to help create height. Whilst the lower part of the room utilises a more matt finish in the marble tile and the sink unit. The striking marble veining adds further interest, bringing in a touch of white to lighten the expanse of black. Finally, the base of the sink has a reeded finish for further tactility.

For some black bathroom accessories ideas, why not start big, the bathtub. This curved, matt black structure takes centre stage to create a sense of opulent drama. The charcoal and taupe colour palette in the rest of the room allows for the bath to be centre stage whilst also feeling calming and indulgent, perfect for a spa-like bath experience.
The mottled stone effect design of Kasota contrasts nicely with the matt finish of the bath whilst the textured surface of Zellica Taupe brings a rustic element to the scheme to stop it feeling too stark and contemporary.

Black often feels like a modern colour but, with the right tone and finish, it can feel heritage inspired too. The key to this look is elevation, which is all in the details, touches of marble, ceiling cornicing and aged brass fixtures. Try and include some antique furniture or accessories too, like art or a towel rack, dark cherry woods would hit the spot nicely!
For a contemporary twist, keep mirrors streamlined, toiletries in frosted glass containers and structural eucalyptus in clear vases. Lighting should also be simplistic to contrast against the ornate marble and cornicing details.
On the floor, we’d keep with the marble theme but go for a muted design, like the porcelain Novene range.

When looking at small black bathroom ideas, the concepts are like any other colour palette. It’s key to zone areas if you can, like this example from The Wooden Hill, the white panelling of the bath area carries round to encompass the bath instead of simply meeting the built in cupboard. The white shade not only works to brighten the vintage painted tub, but it cocoons the bath area.
You can achieve a similar effect with a wet room, choose a slip resistant patterned tile and the right style of fixtures for a more vintage inspired aesthetic.

Most modern black bathroom ideas feature trending looks, however they can look dated quickly, so decorating with black is all about finding the balance of trend versus longevity. Choose fixtures that are sleek but have a more classic feel to them, usually something more slimline and rounded. A brass finish is a good in-between tone that will pop against the black but last the course.
For the tile, its all about the shape and the laying pattern. We’d highly recommend something oblong and in a linear, vertical stacking pattern. Not only will it create height in a darker scheme, but it will look modern without being too trendy. Finally, finish it with a black grout, not only will the grout look better for longer as a darker grout better hides discolouration over time, but it will also deemphasise the laying pattern, so it feels more minimal and classic.

Patterned tiles are always fun but the curved design of PreKast allows you to pretty much create any laying pattern you wish, so you could do retro semi-circles, contemporary ribbons or a complete abstract design. The black in the design helps tone down the pattern, creating a monochromatic scheme that still packs a punch without becoming overwhelming.
You could go one step further and introduce coloured sanitary ware for a really playful feel but we also like this muted gold to add a touch of luxe.

We’ve already spoken about a monochromatic scheme but a combination of black and white doesn’t have to feel ultra-modern, it can also have a classic twist like this Matrix example. The use of the decorative trim adds a 1930s vintage feel whilst the mixing of matt and gloss surface finishes adds a flair of texture to bring the wall alive. Never underestimate the power of the humble tile trim!

If you want an all-black scheme, it will feel extremely dark but also a little unnatural and, for most people, not relaxing. Therefore, it’s important to incorporate some elements of nature within the scheme to enliven it. We’d suggest a feature of dark wood panelling as it will still feel moody but will offer a little relief to the black. A dark stained oak or a walnut would work perfectly with the moody vibe. You could do a feature wall that is completely panelled, or you could create a feature out of the sink and have a mass expanse of wood to break up the area.

In our tile edit so far, we’ve mentioned the classic combination of white and black a lot but perhaps a monochromatic scheme isn’t what you’re looking for. Here we’ve used a dramatic black and white marble effect tile and paired it with a deep forest green Metro tile. It feels dark, moody and luxuriously bougie!
We’ve finished the look with fluted glass, accents of gold metal and a glossy black sink for a nod to the Art Deco movement but you could modernise the look with a matt stone sink and frosted brown glass lighting.

A completely wood panelled room sounds like a rustic cabin hideaway rather than a chic family bathroom, however, hear us out… this amazing look feels opulent, retro and contemporary all at the same time!
The wood grain and colour used is key here, it feels luxurious and sleek rather than overly rustic. Then, combined with the vast marble sink, gold metal accents and slim line mirrors, it feels expensive. The fun chequered flooring however taps into the retro feel with a playful touch. You could recreate this look with our Victorian Mosaic but we’d perhaps take it one step further and use Victorian Flooring Darlington for a more classic geometric pattern.
