Mosaics are a great way to add interest into a tiled space, especially if you’ve opted to include a plainer tile for most of the room. They can be used to create mini feature areas, decorate alcoves, or create borders to break up other tiles.
There’s plenty of choice when it comes to the style of mosaic and as they tend to be attached in larger pieces via a mesh backing, they can be easily DIY’d with a little know-how. Follow our guide on how to lay mosaic tiles to get up to speed!
If you’re laying mosaics yourself and not a regular tiler then we’d advise going for a simple shape and buying a Mosaic Mesh Backer to keep your mesh sturdy.
On to the fun part, styling!
If you’re opting for a mosaic border to break up an expanse of plainer tile, then a range coordinating mosaic is a great option. They are in the same colours as the main range and are designed to work in harmony with the main tile.
The Tekno Triple Mix mosaic is a standout piece that brings the colours of the Tekno range together. It also looks great on its own as a feature area, a shower enclosure for example. A similar design is Mokara’s Linear Mix mosaic.
Similar to the complementary colours, Regal Cubis works with the rest of the neutral Regal collection, however, the cube like design adds a graphic element to the space, perfect if you’re looking for a modern touch in your bathroom.
If you want something a little more rustic or weathered, the Staunton mosaic marries both a textured surface with a subtle geometric design. We love the dramatic graphite shade mixed with the Putty mosaic and a pale wood effect for a touch of Scandi chic.
If you’re looking for something traditional and classic, you can’t go wrong with a little bit of monochromatic chequer. Popularised by the Victorians, the humble chequer has created many a statement floor whether it be an intricate mosaic or decorative marble.
If you want to add texture and interest but not necessarily a pattern, natural stone mosaics are a great addition to a space. Split Face tiles have a rustic vibe that suits both indoors and out depending on your style. Whilst a classic marble mosaic can look just as elegant as a bigger slab.
If you’re a fan of lots of colour then a glass mosaic is the way to go, the Botella range embodies a bold mix of colour with Indian Peacock, through to a shimmering diesel like glimmer with Titanium Glow. These work particularly well in sunny areas or those under dramatic artificial lighting as the colours change and shine in differing lights.
The classic hexagon is an interesting option for a mosaic floor, although you’d think it would only work in a contemporary scheme, in fact, it is extremely versatile, and its appearance is greatly altered by the grout colour you choose. If you choose a white mosaic and opt for a white grout, then it will look clean and only distinguishable up close, however if you opt for a much darker grout then the hexagon format is clearly defined and feels more graphic.
