If you’re looking to transform your downstairs, then there’s no better place to start than with some stair and hallway decorating ideas! Our sTile Consultant has collated five different looks from Pinterest to provide some hallway tiles ideas, allowing you to recreate the looks in your own home from the foundation up.

Throughout this blog we’ll be exploring hallway flooring ideas that can help maximise your space, whether that’s a narrow, dark or an overly spacious hallway! Our sTile Consultant can make any style work for your home with a few simple tips and tricks…

1. Minimalist Wood

A minimally styled space is perfect for those that have a narrow or darker hallway.

The lighter toned walls, painted all the same colour, will provide a seamless finish making the room appear larger as well as brighter. If you’re using a lighter paint shade, it’s important to get the right undertone.

This will then impact on what floor you’ll choose, as again, you need to choose the right base tone. When going for a minimalist scheme I’d always recommend putting a wood grain on the floor, it brings warmth and much needed texture.

There are a few options for the floor, from wood effect tile to laminate and luxury vinyl flooring, all have the effect of wood but with the practicality needed for a high traffic area like a hallway. Real wood or engineered wood will not withstand the pressures of this environment and will be a hassle to maintain!

For hallway vinyl flooring ideas, check out our Pronto range for a variety of wood effect finishes with different textures and tones. Some of my favourites are Koa Oak, Krahn Brown and Daintree Maple.

Some narrow hallway ideas include choosing a herringbone or chevron flooring pattern, whether you go for wood or not, laid horizontally it will give the illusion of width. It’s also a great idea to be selective with colour and furniture. Choose open pieces of furniture to give the illusion of more space and by sticking to only a couple of colours the room will feel harmonious.

Finally, add in some greenery if you can, the softer structure will help blend the harsh lines of the floor tile and the lighter walls.

2. Original Features

If you have a period property, its original features add character to a space. Even if they’ve disappeared over time, replacing them allows you to choose which ones work in harmony with your own style.

If you’ve got a beautiful front door, make it a feature by using colour to highlight the frame, you can then match the tones of the painted door in your floor tile and keep the rest of the room lighter to feel more spacious. Adding a heavily patterned floor tile is a great way to add colour without being too overwhelming in a smaller space. A great tip is to include a border tile that is the same colour as your walls to create that seamless effect. It’s also best to choose a larger print as this will give the illusion of more space.

3. Delicate Textures

When thinking of hallway tiles ideas, it’s vital to keep practicality in mind, however it doesn’t have to be boring! The key is to find a way to add layers of design and texture in a smaller space.

In this example, Lucy Williams has expertly played with texture, the rustic, heavy quarry tiles juxtaposed with the almost mirror like gloss paint on the staircase. Not only is this play of materials divine, the harmonious colour palette of pink, red and orange play together to create a whimsical look.

The whole scheme is then pulled together with simple wood furniture and eclectic design pieces like the wall sconce and art. If you have a darker hallway, don’t pass on the dramatic colour palette, opt for a mirror in the wall nook (where the console table sits) to bring light in from the back of the house. To fit this style, opt for a mirror that has an antiqued finish as it will feel less stark.

If you're not a fan of too much colour, then a textured theme with black and white vinyl flooring in the hallway can work just as well!

4. Light and Dark

If you’ve got a larger or taller hallway then get creative with your hallway flooring ideas, experiment with dark and light shading across the walls and floor.

Terrazzo flooring is a great way to pull the look together as you can pull out tones from its chips of colour to harmonise your scheme.

As this is a more modern finish, you can then dress your space in a variety of styles to suit your taste. With this beautiful forest green colour on the walls, I’d lean towards a mid-century feel with gentle tones of teak, matt black metal and frosted glass pendants. You could also create a nod to the seventies, with tones of burnt orange, touches of luxe velvet and hints of rattan.

Vinyl flooring hallway ideas include Pronto’s Terrazzo Light Grey as the muted tones act as the perfect foundation for the rest of the space. Vinyl flooring is also easier to replace if you want to keep your entryway trend-led.

5. Tonal Colours

Using tonal colours can work for any shape or size hallway, it can also create a very calming effect, very nice for when you come home from a stressful day!

Here, the designer has used a mix of blues and browns for a cool mid-century feel. You can achieve the look with our Henley Ice tile and Dulux’s Sapphire Splendour paint shade.

Make it personal by adding a gallery wall going up the stairs to help draw the eye up a fairly open staircase. I’d also opt for some dramatic dried flowers with a bit of height to connect the lower level and upper level of wood spindles.

We’ve delved into our Instagram archive to pull out some of our favourite hallway snaps, created by your neighbours, to help inspire your hallway tile project.

Natural stone is a great way to introduce warmth, texture and depth into your space and the tile you chose will help determine the style of your hallway. On the left we have a classic flagstone finish with Amazone, a natural limestone, dressed up with textural neutrals and traditional looking wood panelling. In stark contrast, we have an XL sized porcelain stone effect tile for a more minimalist modern looking home.

Paint it black! It can seem a daunting colour but black can make a great hallway colour scheme and can suit a variety of looks, helping your tiles to pop. Both homeowners here have opted for a monochromatic scheme, one feels quite traditional using Newbury on the floor and blending the border tile into the painted stair risers. They’ve softened the look by leaving the steps stained, used a warmer white on the wall and added some fun furniture in a duck egg shade. For a more modern finish, the second homeowner has extended the black found in the pattern to halfway up the wall creating the illusion of panelling, a great option if you don’t want your home to look too traditional. The Berkeley Essence pattern adds a sense of fun amongst the plain, compact space.

Our Victorian Mosaic Chequer tile is a popular hallway floor tile choice, especially for those that have a Georgian or Victorian style property. As it’s a mosaic on a mesh backing it can be easily cut to size to suit any hallway width, whilst drawing the eye down the hallway. As it’s a monochromatic floor tile it allows you to get creative with the rest of the space. One homeowner has chosen to inject colour into the porch door and a full carpeted staircase whilst a more minimalist approach is to stick to a simple palette of neutrals like this grey edged stair running. Both have used fabric to soften the hard flooring whilst adding layers of texture with velvet, rattan and lots of greenery.

Finally, this more modern property has been transformed into a neutral haven, mixing different eras and finishes together for an eclectic but contemporary look to suit the property. The mottled stone effect floor tile contrasts with the sleek glass staircase whilst the old oak bench creates a juxtaposition with the more streamlined console table. The white, grey and beige colour palette harmonises the overall finish.
