When considering your tile project, it’s important to budget for every aspect of your project and one of those items often overlooked is the tile trim. It provides a functional purpose in that it protects the edges of your tiles from chipping and makes the edges of tiles easier to keep clean. However, they also provide an aesthetic purpose by creating a sleek finish to your tiles and can also be used as a decorative piece to help zone, colour block or accentuate your tile design.

How to make exposed tile edges look finished?

If you’ve chosen a half or three-quarter tile design on your wall, a splash back or have exposed corners then a tile trim is the perfect choice for finishing those unsightly edges. They’re available in a range of profile types, finishes and of courses sizes to suit the thickness of your chosen tile.

All you need to do is choose your design and ensure it’s the right width to suit your tile’s thickness. Then, when applying to your wall, press the trim into the tile adhesive so the adhesive passes through the anchor holes. Back butter your tile and then position the tile so it’s flush to the rear of the trim. If you’re tiling an area that will get wet, use a 2mm spacer between your tile and the trim and grout in between to ensure it’s watertight.

So, now we’ve got the boring how-to sorted, let’s discuss interior ideas and how we can get creative with tile trims!

Tile Edge Ideas

First, we have some of our favourite neutral bathroom ideas using Regal, a collection that features various formats of full-bodied porcelain in a range of stunning warm neutrals for that easy, contemporary finish.

These neutral bathroom tiles ideas are perfect for any size bathroom, allowing you to incorporate certain design elements into your own space.

Shower Shelves

To hide unsightly pipes for a flush sink unit and shower, we’ve boxed them in and then used glossy tiles to make it into a design statement. The design creates this super sleek shelf, perfect for toiletries or simply accessorising if you have a larger bathroom.

The coordinating Regal trim acts as a water barrier whilst providing that sleek finish, perfectly matching the tiles in tone.

Niche Storage

Alcoves in showers have become popular in the last couple of years as they’re perfect for showcasing your favourite toiletries, saving space and avoiding those hard to clean metal racks! But why not take it one step further and incorporate this design into even the most compact of bathrooms as aesthetically pleasing storage.

Seamless Skirting

When laying your floor tiles, simply finishing the wall with a skirting board to hide the perimeter expansion gap is common practice, however we love a tiled skirting. It creates a seamless flow to your flooring as it carries the same floor tile up on to the wall to your desired height. It’s super easy to clean and as it’s a flat smooth surface it doesn’t attract dust the same as a decorative wooden skirting does. Finally, a matching trim on top adds that finishing touch and all it needs is a damp cloth run over the top occasionally!

Talking of floors, the Regal collection also has a range of matching door bars, Z bars and movement joints so you can create that seamless flow across the threshold into other rooms too!

Next, let’s explore some colour! Here we’re using our Matrix Collection which boasts 23 colours ALL with matching trims and grouts so you can really create a unique colour experience.

High Contrast

Bathrooms are typically hard to inject with personality, however if you want to include some colour you can use a high contrast design to create a statement.

Here, the top half of the wall is tiled in a matt black which is followed up on the ceiling in a similar shade of paint to create a cocooning feel. The black is broken up with randomly placed pastels that harmonise with the bottom half of the tiled wall which is a burnt terracotta shade. The use of the Spring Mint trim however creates a definitive contrast between the schemes, helping create depth by pulling out the edge of the shelf, stopping the design from looking flat.

Decorative Borders

Although monochromatic, this black and white look is given a vintage nod with the addition of the black trim breaking up the mass of white. It has a subtle 1930s feel to it which is brought alive by the mix of the matt and gloss tiles in each colour, providing depth and interest to an otherwise plain colour scheme.

Want to add in some colour? Try a playful wall sconce or perhaps a pastel ceramic basin!

Bauhaus Brights

The Matrix Collection has a range of tones to choose from but ones we love come from the brighter end of the spectrum. If you typically find brighter colours a little harsh or overwhelming then be inspired by the Bauhaus movement, it uses primary colours to create geometric and bold shaped design.

This look is encapsulated in this simple grey splashback. Ideal for compact bathrooms or playful WCs, a light colour scheme helps keep a smaller space feeling fresh and airy, but these pops of colour help to add depth and interest. Why stop with the trim? Add a contrasting grout in another colour, like this yellow, to create a graphic finish.

If you’re decorating a shower room, then consider using one of these brighter colours in the Matrix tiles in the shower enclosure to bring the look together. To continue the Bauhaus theme, accessorise the space with pops of red, green and accents of black.

The Metallic Trims

Whether you love the idea of a shower alcove, a zoned space, or a decorative border, always consider the trim material to get the most out of your design. If you’re looking for an interesting contrast but don’t want to venture into bright colours, then why not tap into the metallic trend.

With a range of finishes from matt black all the way to bold copper, there’s a metallic shade to suit your project!
