Originating from Sweden, the term ‘the red thread’ is used to describe the presence of a theme being followed. It’s important to note that the term doesn’t literally mean a ‘red thread’ rather it simply refers to creating a sense of cohesion.
In interior design, the principle is the same: ‘red thread’ is used to describe a theme that ties different elements together to create a sense of unity. Whether the theme is nature or bright colours splashed around your home, the idea is to create one common feature that appears in each space to provide a sense of flow.
Truth is, you probably incorporate a ‘red thread’ in your home automatically but we want to show you how to do this intentionally with a subtle colour palette.
Neutrals are the easiest and most popular red thread. You can create a red thread using neutrals through the incorporation of natural furnishings and materials such as wooden surfaces or tan and beige paints. Remember, the red thread is not about covering the same colour on every wall, rather it’s about nodding to neutrals throughout your home.
A playful palette that contains dashes of colour can infuse a home with character and individuality.
Creating a red thread doesn’t mean that the rooms need to mirror each other, rather they need to flow together. With this palette achieve a red thread by accessorising some rooms with pink cushions and deep red throws and others with a pink gallery wall or blush furnishings.
A key colour for creating your red thread, greys are versatile and not hard to maintain. Plus, they pair perfectly with most colour palettes and are a great way to add accents to your home.
We recommend opting for charcoal or matt black and choosing the same finishes for your radiators and even your clocks. For a more daring look, why not match the doors too?
A bright and light colour is a perfect way to balance a rich colour scheme. Using a shade like lilac is a quick way to completely change the mood of a room, plus it creates a carefree summer breeze flowing through your interiors. For a sense of contrast, pair lilac with a deep mature red as this mellows the colour to create a sense of comfort.
