What is the red thread in interior design?

Originating from Sweden, the term ‘the red thread’ is used to describe the presence of a theme being followed. It’s important to note that the term doesn’t literally mean a ‘red thread’ rather it simply refers to creating a sense of cohesion.

In interior design, the principle is the same: ‘red thread’ is used to describe a theme that ties different elements together to create a sense of unity. Whether the theme is nature or bright colours splashed around your home, the idea is to create one common feature that appears in each space to provide a sense of flow.

Truth is, you probably incorporate a ‘red thread’ in your home automatically but we want to show you how to do this intentionally with a subtle colour palette.

Neutrals

Neutrals are the easiest and most popular red thread. You can create a red thread using neutrals through the incorporation of natural furnishings and materials such as wooden surfaces or tan and beige paints. Remember, the red thread is not about covering the same colour on every wall, rather it’s about nodding to neutrals throughout your home.

Pinks and Reds

A playful palette that contains dashes of colour can infuse a home with character and individuality.

Creating a red thread doesn’t mean that the rooms need to mirror each other, rather they need to flow together. With this palette achieve a red thread by accessorising some rooms with pink cushions and deep red throws and others with a pink gallery wall or blush furnishings.

Charcoal and Grey

A key colour for creating your red thread, greys are versatile and not hard to maintain. Plus, they pair perfectly with most colour palettes and are a great way to add accents to your home.

We recommend opting for charcoal or matt black and choosing the same finishes for your radiators and even your clocks. For a more daring look, why not match the doors too?

Lilac

A bright and light colour is a perfect way to balance a rich colour scheme. Using a shade like lilac is a quick way to completely change the mood of a room, plus it creates a carefree summer breeze flowing through your interiors. For a sense of contrast, pair lilac with a deep mature red as this mellows the colour to create a sense of comfort.

Plush Pinks

To create a red thread throughout the home using a plush pink colour palette we have opted for pink bathroom subway tiles and have paired them with a gloss black sink and brass taps. This look follows the red thread trend perfectly and would make a seamless main bathroom or sit nicely with the bedroom as an en suite. For a sense of flow, the other rooms have been decorated with the colour palette, echoed in paints, prints, cushions and accessories.

Graceful Flow

In this look, we have created a pared-back red thread, yet it is still captivating. The kitchen units are a softer grey and have been paired with white and light pink tiles.

In line with the red thread theory, this look leads seamlessly into the dining room which has been furnished with a grey lamp and pink sofa. The black table and chair legs are a nod to the bathroom accents and create a sense of natural cohesion.

The bedroom adapts the trend in reverse with a charcoal colour on the wall and a print to add lighter shades. This is a perfect example of incorporating a red thread throughout without feeling the need to mirror other rooms.

It’s All About You

The way a red thread is created in your home is down to you. If you want to achieve a sense of flow and theme, yet don’t want rooms to be replicas of one another, create your red thread by using less dominant colours and textures.

In this look, the colours are more discrete yet the wooden theme and white accents are carried throughout the rooms. Therefore, although the bathroom doesn’t have any red accents, it still sits comfortably in the aesthetic of the home because of the incorporation of the wood effect floor tiles and crisp white wall tiles. If you wanted to be exact, then you could simply add in a soap dispenser or piece of art to carry in the red into the bathroom too.

While we have provided examples of our favourite ways to incorporate the red thread, it can be achieved any way you like. So if you want to achieve a sense of comfort and achieve that finished feeling, why not give it a go?
