Renovating your kitchen often means choosing a timeless style and complementary colour palette, and beige or cream are often the go to neutrals to help achieve this. In this blog post we talk you through how to choose what colour floor tiles with a cream kitchen.
Floor tiles are often a greater investment than your walls tiles because a) it’s a much larger area to cover b) it’s harder to change later down the line and c) they need to be much more durable and practical for every day living. So, a lot is being asked of the floor in your new kitchen so it’s key to tap into the right combinations to ensure you stay in love with your tiles for the next few years.
Here are some of our suggestions…
Although it requires a bit of upkeep, natural stone is a great choice for a kitchen floor. The hard, durable slabs of natural stone work well with most types of kitchens and can be fitted on top of underfloor heating. For a modern country vibe, we’ve paired a sleek shaker style kitchen with the tumbled honed edges of Amazone limestone. The soft hints of grey work well with the cleaner ivory units.
To keep the look modern, we’ve used a darker work top and a pop of pastel yellow for the splashback. The glossy Matrix Collection Primrose Yellow tile perfectly toes the line between modern and country chic. Adding touches of brass in the handles, taps and shelving soften the look and tie wall tile, units, and floor together in a harmonious blend of warm, comforting neutrals.
If you like the look of minimalism but don’t want an all-white scheme, mixing shades of beige with dramatic black helps achieve a modern look that doesn’t feel too stark and clinical. A contemporary style kitchen with pine work tops and streamlined matt cream doors needs a contrasting gloss tile to reflect the natural light.
So, what to pair with this style on the floor? More beige, vanilla to be precise. Regal Vanilla Matt in the large 80x40cm format will make your kitchen feel bigger, the tone perfectly blending with the wood grain of the pine with few grout lines in between.
Using bold colour is a great way to bring a neutral kitchen to life, but for the sake of getting bored of it later, sticking to colour on the walls is a safer bet. Here we’ve used the oh so sumptuous Minton Hollins Roker in Scuba Blue. The jewel toned blue really makes the cream Aga pop; to make a feature out of the chimney breast, the pantry cupboards have been painted in a tonal blue hue which helps blend them in to the background.
Mixing a vintage Victorian pattern tile with a classic Aga oven can feel very traditional so we’ve kept the styling contemporary with light woods and clean white porcelain. To continue the more contemporary feel we’ve also chosen a floor tile that suits this aesthetic.
The kitchen isn’t often thought of as a serene space however, we think cooking should be a calming and cathartic experience and your space should help create the right atmosphere.
Using lots of natural materials will help give the illusion of calmness, reeded wood units, walnut chopping boards and warm toned terrazzo on the floor will help ground your kitchen. To pick it back up, add a zing of colour on the walls, and in this case the pantry cupboard too.
Achieve the look by using a terrazzo effect tile on the floor, we love it in a diamond pattern. And pair it with Flute Bright Skies on the wall. You can get the matching paint colour via Dulux as Bright Skies is their 2022 Colour of the Year.
When you’ve chosen a lighter coloured kitchen, even bare wood like ply, it’s important to add touches of warmth back in. The lovely matt finish of the Linear Bone Matt splashback contrasts nicely with the rich brass tap and Foundry wall trim.
Continue the contrast on the floor with Mora Walnut. The deep velvety tones of the grain add much needed texture and depth to the room. Lay them vertically to your units to help elongate your kitchen, or if you’re working with a galley kitchen, lay them horizontally for the room to appear wider.
Five ways to choose floor tiles for a cream kitchen. Remember, the floor is your foundation and should feel timeless so opt for something neutral and preferably natural (in look, not necessarily in material!) and you’ll love it for years to come. Explore the option of underfloor heating because nothing beats standing at a warm stove with toasty feet on a cold winter day, it’ll soon become your favourite room in the home.
