The kitchen is the heart of any country-inspired home. When you think of a country kitchen you probably conjure up the idea of a cramped oak kitchen with broken terracotta tiles and there’s probably a floral blind over the wooden window. But the country look comes in a variety of styles, making it truly adaptable, from fun and colourful to opulent and grand. It all depends on the proportions of your room, the style of the property and of course, the tiles you choose.
In this blog post, we chat through five country kitchen ideas to help inspire your kitchen renovation and give you some helpful tips on how to achieve the perfect country-style kitchen.

This look can be both Victorian or Georgian-inspired, it really depends on the style of your property and how grand you want to make it. From a Victorian standpoint, it’s all about unfussy design and practicality.
The best way of achieving this type of look is to go for a free-standing kitchen. If you’re committed, source antique pieces like a centre table with a marble or granite top, an open dresser and of course, a large burner-style stove.
A mishmash of texture and colour brings interest to the room and your tiles should act as a foundation to help ground the overall look.
A classic flagstone floor is the perfect base for a country look, dress it up with a mosaic style splashback, we love the simplicity of the Newbury tile against the unique variation of the Amazone grey limestone floor.
If you’re painting the walls and furniture, try opposing shades but keep them muted to celebrate the Victorian aesthetic. Heritage by Dulux in DH Oxford Blue and Quartz Grey would be a great combination with the tiles.
A rustic brick kitchen is a great way to tap into the modern country aesthetic. However, it’s important to consider the tone of the brickwork and how this will impact the rest of the space. It’s best to limit the exposed brick to a single wall to create a feature but you could recreate a painted brick effect on an opposing wall with the use of brick tiles.
If you’ve got a yellow or red-based brick wall, then try Hartley White with an off-white shaker-style kitchen. To balance out the small bricks, you should opt for an XL tiled floor. The Kelsey Mid Grey tile is the perfect shade of grey to work with any rustic brick wall.
To complete the look, include clear glass lighting, preferably pendants, and a wooden countertop. Heritage by Dulux’s Flax Seed is a gentle cream shade which will help bring all the elements of the room together whilst adding a touch of warmth to the walls.
Pinterest Inspiration, Carrara Honed Marble Tile, Wood Effect Tile, Heritage by Dulux in DH Drab, & Turtledove Grey, Brass Tap, Brass Door Knob, Glass Pendant
Green can be used in various shades to create your dream green country kitchen. Our favourite is Heritage by Dulux in DH Drab which is a rich, velvety green which adds a touch of elegance.
This colour looks fabulous alongside a classic shaker kitchen which can be dressed up with opulent brass fixtures, a honed marble tile splashback and a bare wood effect tile floor. We’d recommend a honed stone for a country aesthetic as a highly polished finish feels a little off-kilter with the humble shaker units.
To keep it glam, opt for a neutral colour palette, clear glass and brass or copper fixtures. Contrast the tranquil velvet green with Oak tiles on the floor. If you’ve got the budget, opt for some glass doors to break up some of the colours, and riven glass will add another layer of luxury and texture to the mix.
Country looks don’t always have to be neutral in tone, injecting some colour into the woodwork is a great way to modernise rustic country vibes. The best way to approach the design is to choose an accent colour and then stick with that in pops around the room. For example, choose a pared-back kitchen in a tongue and groove style, preferably a shade of off-white, and match your splashback or wall tiles to the units. Minton Hollins Country Rustic tile in white is a great option as it already feels aged whilst adding a premium edge.
If you want a pattern on the floor, a cool-toned blue is very versatile, our preference is Henley Ice tile. But if you want a block colour then try painting your floorboards in a fun colour to match your painted doors.
Heritage by Dulux Maritime Teal is a nice soft, warm blue, great with classic oak worktops and tables, and pairs nicely with Swedish White on the kitchen units.
Pinterest Inspiration, Quarry Autumn Blend Tile, Linen Towel, Heritage by Dulux in Green Earth, Storage Basket, Enamel Tableware, Glass Pitcher
Another way to tap into the country look is to go French rustic, full of soft linens, antiqued furniture, and textured walls. It can be full of pattern and colour or simple and neutral depending on your taste.
We love a neutral shabby-chic kitchen with a dramatic warm floor like Quarry. The texture and variance give it an aged look perfect for a rustic and worn finish. For your splashback, ensure you go for a tile that looks handmade to suit the vibe.
We’d advise painting the units and walls in the same shade for consistency, and when working with reds and greens, something with a green/yellow undertone is ideal (depending on the direction of your room). Green Earth from Heritage by Dulux is the perfect off-white neutral for this look.
We've pulled together some additional tips and advice on the things you should include to create a timeless country kitchen no matter your style or aesthetic.
Rustic textures are synonymous with the country kitchen look. These rustic details can be brought into your design in a number of ways.
Our top tip is to include some rustic shelving units which are not only practical but help to fill empty walls with added character. Alternatively, if your space allows, enhancing or adding rustic beams to your room will help to elevate the entire style. Practical items and accessories can be added too through upcycling or second-hand furniture. This look can then be carried through by using wood, or wood effect tiling on your floors. Alternatively, you could include natural stone tiles. Natural limestone and slate can help you easily achieve an elegant appeal in your space.
Country kitchens embrace the clutter but in a thoughtful and strategic way. Including your kitchen items as decorative pieces will add that much-needed charm to create a country-look kitchen. Consider including shelving and kitchen rails to hang your pots and tableware. Alternatively, adding glass-frosted display units can help you achieve this look with a more subtle and elegant twist.
Including tile features in your kitchen is a great way to elevate the look. Consider creating a striking splashback with decorative patterned tiles or enhance alcoves and pantries with vintage rustic design tiles. Incorporating unique tile designs can add character and charm to your kitchen space, making it a focal point for both style and functionality.
So, what have we learnt about country styles? You can dress it up or down depending on your preference but always keep it simple and matt for a contemporary finish. It’s ok for pattern and texture to clash in this relaxed interior style but keep the colours harmonious and preferably neutral.
