Blue and white is a classic colour combination and seen throughout history, such as the stunning architectural colour palette of the Greek islands, most famously Mykonos. Classic French Breton striped clothing and of course, beautiful ceramic pottery originating in Southern China that inspired the famous blue and white Delftware in 17th century Holland.

Dotted around history and continuously updated to suit modern tastes, various shades of blue and white can be mixed to pay homage to a variety of interior styles. In this blog, we take you through some of our favourite tile combinations to provide blue and white bathroom ideas as well as how to translate this colour combination into your kitchen.

Bathroom Ideas

The White Bathroom

Typically, bathrooms are quite compact and often have very little natural light, either by skylight or a smaller frosted window. A white scheme will therefore help a room to feel bright and lighter, it will also help blend in your white sanitary ware helping the room to feel a little bigger. But an all-white scheme can feel a little cold and clinical therefore a hint of colour and a little natural texture is needed to create depth and warmth.

Here we’ve added a small but decoratively styled splashback using Diamante Pastel Sky in a herringbone pattern. The soft blue tone doesn’t grab the focus but does draw in the eye to the central feature that is the double sink. The sleek white and soft blue are warmed up with the gently textured natural wood grain and brown glass accessories. Added natural greenery is a great way to blend cold and warm tones together.

The Blue Bathroom

Finding the right shade of blue for your bathroom’s orientation is important, luckily there are some blues that work for all such as Flute’s Bright Skies. When coming up with blue bathroom ideas it’s a good idea to consider how to add interest and depth to the space so it doesn’t feel too flat.

Here, the decor tile has a reeded effect providing instant texture, to further differentiate the elements of the room we’ve utilised different laying patterns, herringbone on the main wall and linear brick on the bathtub.

We’ve also used grout to fuse different areas of the room and help blend the blue and white elements together. The back wall uses a lime grout to work with the brass fixtures and the bath tiling has white grout to complement the white sanitary ware.

As there is already a large amount of blue and white in the space, opt for a harmonious colour on the ceiling, like Dulux’s Tranquil Dawn, to create a soft haze between wall and ceiling (or tile and paint) rather than going for a bright white which will shorten the appearance of the bathroom.

The Rustic Blue Bathroom

Mid-blue tones, like a good pair of jeans, age well over time. Adding in a blue tile with a rustic printed design will help you achieve an aged look overnight, whether you live in the Mediterranean or Slough…

The key is to not overwhelm the space by only tiling halfway up the wall in most of the room, you can then finish off the tile with a matt black or aged brass trim depending on your preferred fixtures and fittings.

Here we’ve pulled out the blackened patina in the Catania Blue tile to mix in elements of black into the room, most noticeably in the mosaic floor tile. Mosaics often have a more rustic feel to them due to their intricate appearance and can work well to pull out different colours in the rest of the room. We’ve chosen a Victorian inspired pattern to fit with the era of this particular house and blended everything together by using vintage sanitary ware.

The Modern White Bathroom

Playing with surface texture is a great way to add interest into a white scheme. The Spectre Milk tile features a mix of matt, gloss, and holographic surface finishes, meaning it adapts in different lights and becomes an instant feature in the room.

Continue the modern look with sleek chrome fixtures and trim and then pull out the holographic hues by using amber coloured glassware, rosy pink towels and a sumptuously dark blue on the wall to ground the look.

To keep the room feeling fresh and modern go for a light oak wood effect on the floor. Alternatively, if you don’t like wood or want to create a darker atmosphere try a matt concrete effect tile in a dark grey like Abrasio Basalt.

Kitchen Ideas

The White Kitchen Diner

A white tile is a basic kitchen splashback so how can we dress it up to make it shine? A mix of interior styles works well in adding some unexpected intrigue.

Diamante White, a sleek white gloss tile, has a bevelled edge giving it a classic appearance, juxtapose this by laying it in a modern pattern like vertical linear brick with a thin grout line. A soft grey grout will help define the edges of the tile without making it feel too blocky.

For the rest of the kitchen, be inspired by the modern country style with classic shaker units, rounded antique fixtures and fittings and then jazz it up with a bold shade of blue like Dulux’s Bright Skies on the cupboard fronts.

Add warmth to the white and blue by using a wood effect tile of the floor, if you’ve opted for an oak work top, try and complement it to your floor’s oak tone.

THE MODERN COASTAL KITCHEN

Using a tile that has a matt and textured finish will create a softer backdrop to your kitchen. A deep ocean blue like Anya envelopes this kitchen in a soothing cocoon of colour. The vertical border tile in contrasting Anya Frost breaks up the mass of blue and helps blend in the cool toned marble worktop and pink units.

Weathered wood, worn leather and mottled concrete accessories complete the coastal vibe whilst avoiding it feeling twee or old fashioned. Mirror the tone of Anya Frost on your floor in either a wood effect or stone effect depending on your taste.

THE HERITAGE KITCHEN WITH A TWIST

For Georgian and Edwardian style properties, a classic style kitchen is usually the most visually appealing in the room’s proportions, kitted out with gold or brass fittings and a traditional butler sink for a luxury feel. However, you don’t want your space to feel like a museum recreation! Modernise the kitchen by choosing a dark moody blue on the units and create a striking feature on the wall with tiles.

Here we’ve opted for Flute White in a mix of the plain and decor tiles in a beautiful chevron pattern. This is a great laying pattern if you have a tall but narrow kitchen as it will make it appear wider.

Finish the look with a dark walnut wood effect on the floor, or a Victorian black and white chequer if you want to go a bit more traditional and mix in lighter wood elements and clear glassware in your accessories.

THE MID-CENTURY MARBLE KITCHEN

Tap into the revived mid-century trend with a sleek kitchen design in a soft teal. Balance out the colour with a small format marble wall tile, like Linear Calacatta, and blackened wood furniture with accents of rattan.

Aged brass or copper fixtures, stoneware ceramics and elegant white pottery will elevate the look and give a lived-in feel. Contrast the bright white tiles with a dark wood effect tile on the floor to harmoniously tie in the light and dark tones in the room.
