Batch variation is the natural difference in shade or finish that can occur between production runs of the same tile. Two boxes of the “same” tile can look slightly different side by side, and that's completely normal. It's not a fault, it's just how tiles are made. Here's what causes it and how to avoid any issues on your next job.

Tiles are fired in batches, and small shifts in raw materials, glaze mix or kiln temperature between runs can leave a subtle difference in shade or texture, even when the product code stays the same. You'll notice it most on natural stone effect tiles and on plain, pale or matt finishes where any tonal shift is more visible.

Every box carries a batch number on its label. Boxes that share the same batch number were fired together and will match consistently, so it's always worth checking before you start.

The good news is that batch variation is easy to manage with a little planning.

• Order everything in one go - Order your full quantity in one go, rather than splitting the order across separate purchases.
• Check the batch numbers on every box - Do this on delivery or collection, before you start fixing. It only takes a minute and could save a lot of hassle.
• Order around 10% extra - This covers cuts, wastage and any future repairs. If your batch has moved on by the time you need more tiles, an exact match may not be possible.
• Reordering? Quote your original order reference so the branch can try to match your existing batch.

If you've received boxes from different batches, here's what to do before you fix anything.

1. Check the batch numbers on every box before fixing anything.
2. Lay tiles from each batch together in natural light to see how noticeable the difference really is.
3. If the difference is subtle, work from three or four boxes at once to blend it naturally across the area.
4. If the difference is significant, contact your branch before fixing. Unopened boxes can be returned.
