10 minutes with Sarah Beeny

Here at Topps Tiles we love a good renovation project and we're always on the lookout for the latest advice on how to make a project run as smoothly as possible.

With that in mind, we recently sat down with TV property guru and Topps Tiles brand ambassador, Sarah Beeny, to chat all things ‘renovation'.

As one of the country's most familiar and trusted names in the world of property, Sarah gives us her top tips – from perfect planning to being bold and brave when it comes to taking on your own renovation project!

Plan….then do!

Some people are so eager to get stuck into their renovation project that they overlook a key part of the process - planning. This can be a big mistake because project planning is the bedrock on which everything rests.

With this in mind, set specific deadlines to work to and an end date that's realistic. If you make this day something important like a family event or an anniversary, you're more likely to stay on schedule and remember important deadlines in the project.

Work to realistic budgets

We all have visions of our dream renovation – the trick is turning it into reality, whatever your budget. Careful planning will help you to stay on top of your finances. A useful tip is to order all the products you need in advance rather than as you go.

It's all about making the right choices. There may be areas where you can splash out a little bit extra, if savings are made in other places. Tiles are a good example of where it pays to spend on quality because there's a dramatic difference at the top end that can give your room real impact.

Measure-up!

It might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people take inaccurate measurements. The outcome is that products have to re-ordered, costing precious time and money.

It's essential that you spend time taking accurate measurements for everything from floor tiles to door frames. Create a safe record with all the details in one place, close to hand.

Be brave

Interior trends are always evolving but this doesn't mean that you have to go for the safe option. If you like a particular design or colour – go for it.

Don't be wary of big impact statements – such as a tile with a strong design or a bold colour scheme. Design mistakes can be prevented by making sure you use samples properly in the planning stage. And remember don't panic about making choices – be brave.

Changing your mind

In some instances, it may come to the point where you regret the decisions you made on a certain part of a project. But try to have confidence that your vision will work and always sleep on a change before making any decisions.

Having said that, the biggest mistake is not admitting you've made a mistake. Don't be afraid to change your mind if the problem cannot be overcome.

One final piece of advice – enjoy it. Renovation projects are fun and they can give you an immense sense of pride once everything is done.
