At the recent Oracle Retail Week Awards, the Store Manager of our Croydon Thornton store, Astone Davids, was named Store Manager of the Year 2015! Following his fantastic achievement; we sat down with Astone to get to know him a little better and ask him a few questions about his Retail Week Awards experience.
1. Congratulations on your award Astone! Were you surprised to be crowned Store Manager of the Year?
Yes, I was very surprised! I didn't even think I was the Store Manager of the year at Topps Tiles, let alone in the country! I feel very blessed and humbled by the award.
2. What do you think you do differently as a Manager that sets you apart from the rest?
I wouldn't necessarily say I do anything differently, there are lots of other Store Managers out there with the same principles as me, but what I think maybe stood out is my passion for people, both for my customers and the people I work with. Customer service is at the forefront of everything we do in store.
3. How did it feel when they announced you were the winner on the night?
There were quite a few mixed emotions, I felt shocked because I didn't expect it and then I was overjoyed!
4. Did you enjoy the Awards evening?
I enjoyed it thoroughly! It was a very swanky evening in a nice hotel in central London with a delicious three course meal. It was a great experience - they call it the ‘Oscars of the retail world'!
5. How long have you been a Store Manager for?
Probably five years going on six? And yes, I'm still enjoying every minute of it!
6. What do you enjoy most about your role?
I'm not from around here, originally I'm from South Africa, so being so far away from my family is very difficult sometimes but working for Topps Tiles makes it a bit easier as I've found some of those family values within my workplace. We're quite small teams within stores so you become very close to the people you work with in the sense they become like family to you.
Thank you Astone and congratulations once again for your fantastic achievement!
