Britain’s got talent for mosaics
Joan Edwards from Wakefield is the nation’s top amateur mosaic artist, beating off entries from 250 budding artists countrywide to become Britain’s most talented newcomer.
Joan scooped the £500 national prize in the Topps Tiles Awards for Achievement in Mosaic and her work will soon go on display at Topps’ HQ near Leicester.
The competition provides a showcase for beginners learning mosaic at adult education centres; community groups and workshops and Joan’s work is a remarkable achievement for a novice who is still learning the craft.
Her mosaic is called “Koi Joy” and it came about when she decided she needed a garden feature in her patio floor. “I really wanted a fish pond” Joan confirmed “but ,with two cats, that wasn’t practical so I settled on a koi carp mosaic that suits the location perfectly.
“I’m amazed to be chosen the national winner. My husband and all my friends and family are very proud and pleased for me and I’m quite enjoying being a bit of a celebrity” she said.
