DIY Ideas for Leftover Tiles

It's that time of year again: the sun is shining, the birds are singing and we're dreaming of all the summer DIY projects we can do, now that the weather allows us to get outside and get to work. By far our favourite kind of DIY project is one that makes use of things we already have lying around the house; not only is it cheap to do, but it's also a positive way to reduce needless waste.

Unsurprisingly, a question we're often asked by people is how they can reuse their leftover tiles. The great thing about tiles is that there are so many different ways they can be used. We decided to put together this blog post to inspire you with just a few DIY tile projects, and if you've already come up with your own design idea then we'd love to hear about it!

Tile coasters

One great use for leftover tiles is to make them into coasters. This works well because there's very little work to do - most tiles are already the right size and shape and ceramic is an ideal material to protect surfaces from hot drinks. We love these gorgeous patterned coasters made from leftover tiles. If you want to create a really professional finish, glue some felt on the underside of each tile to protect your table from scratches.

Mosaic mirror

Another option is to use your leftover tiles to create a mosaic-framed mirror - you can see plenty of great examples of this here. Our particular favourites are ones that use a variety of tiles within the same colour palette to create a tonal mosaic effect. We also like the designed that use tile fragments to create a unique border for a mirror - perfect if you have broken tiles lying around.

Tree stump mosaic table

Attach mosaic tiles to the flat surface of a tree stump to make a unique stool or side table, as shown here. We'd recommended varnishing over the tiles to create a smooth, clean surface once you've stuck down your tiles.

Mosaic art

This idea is obviously better suited to people who have lots of leftover tiles, or who have a lot more time to create something special. You can see some incredibly detailed mosaic-tile art pieces here, but you could still create an artistic design with mosaic tiles on a smaller scale. Why not build it into a tiled feature wall?

These are just a few ways you can use leftover tiles, but there are plenty of other creative projects you could incorporate them into this summer, why not take a look at our Pinterest board for inspiration? We'd love to hear about what you've made with your spare tiles!
